32 - Relationships

I look up into Josh's eyes with worry. I turn around in his arms and hold them across my front like Nina did with Benny during sunrise. I looked at my dad. "What the hell are you doing Rebecca Melini-Gonzalez?" I flinched, no one had ever called me by my full name before. I took a deep breath and looked up to Josh then to my father.

"Dad, meet Josh, my boyfriend and a standby and swing in Hamilton. He plays all the male ensemble roles and does Laurens/Philip." Josh stepped from behind me and held his hand out to shake my dad's. Instead of shaking it my dad slapped his arm. I pulled Josh back to me and held him close. "Dad, please. Don't hurt him."

"I can't believe you have a boyfriend. You are way to young and you are just starting your career Becky. And if he's already in Hamilton then he must be way older than you missy."

"He's 18, and only ten and a half months older than me. His birthday was January 15th. We've been together for almost a month now."

"A month and you haven't fucking told me. You are in big trouble Becky."

"This is exactly why I didn't tell you! I knew you would be mad at me. A lot of teens my age are in relationships. You and mom have been together since you were my age. So you you can't really talk. And before you ask, mom does know, she was the first person I told."

"MANDY!" My dad yelled. My mom ran over and saw the worried look on my face and the angry look on Doug's.

"What's going on Doug? Why are you shouting?" She said taking his hand.

"You know about this." He pointed at Josh and I. Josh now had his arms around me, protectively and I leaned on his chest, trying not to cry. I didn't want to ruin the makeup Mandy had spent and hour putting on me.

"Yes I do Douglas. And I'm very happy for our baby girl. Becky and Josh are very happy together in their relationship, and they are so cute together. So please. Stop yelling at our daughter, when she's done nothing wrong."

"I still don't think it's the right time for her to be in a relationship."

"Well I'm ready for a relationship Douglas." I said with a sterner tone of voice.

"Don't you call me Douglas young lady."

"Don't call me Rebecca then." I retaliated. I knew mom would be angry at him for calling me Rebecca.

"You did what Douglas?" My mom stepped away from him and towards me.

"He called me Rebecca, mom." I let go of Josh and hugged Mandy, burying the side of my head into her chest.

"Why the hell did you do that?" She glared at her husband as she comforted me, wrapping her arms around me

"Because I was mad at her for dating this guy."

"But that's not a reason to call her Rebecca. We never call her Rebecca, no one has ever called her that. And as far as I'm aware, she's changing it at 18 to legally be Becky."

"Yep." I nodded against her chest. "Dad, Josh and I want to be together and there's not really anything you can do about it. I see him every day and we love being together. He's really nice to me, he sweet, gentle, loving, caring and treats me like a princess. I love him dad, and if you can't see that we want to be together then just ignore me forever."

"I love you Becky." Josh said coming to me and gave me a little shoulder massage as I stood in Mandy's arms.

"I love you too." I step away from my mom and place a hand on Josh's cheek and kiss him on the lips. I didn't care that my father is there. I know that my mom supports us and that's all I need. Her support is the most important thing to me. I hear angry footsteps marching away from me and I knew Doug had stormed off.

"Douglas, babe, come back." My mom called. I pulled apart from the kiss with Josh and looked at my mom. "Baby, can you go find and watch Maribelle for me. I'm going to sort your father out again. I love you baby girl and you will always have my support."

"Thanks mom. I love you too. And you have my support forever." She kisses my forehead and walks off after Doug. "Come on babe. Let's go find my sister." I take his hand, intertwining our finger and try to find Mari. "Maribelle? Where are you sis?"

"Becky? I'm with Chris, Karen, Lin and their families. Where are you?" I look for Chris as he's tall and spot them. I sneak up behind my sister and hug her from behind. "Oh hey Becky."

"Hey sis. Um, Mari, this is news to you but the rest of you should know, this is my boyfriend Josh. Obviously Lin you know him, but Karen and Chris I wanted you to meet him. He's the one I had to cancel my date with when we had the rehearsal."

"Nice to meet you Josh." Chris said. Josh stood frozen.

"You okay babe?" I put a hand on his shoulder.

"Oh yeah, Um Hi. Sorry. This is just crazy for me. I was a fan of this show back when it came out, I still am a fan. I was going through a really rough time and I used this show as my escape root. I visited the stage door as much as I could, but never got to see the show." He put his hand in his pocket and took his phone out. He then removed the photos from the case. "These are from the various times I met you." He showed them the photos and I smiled at him.

"These are amazing Josh. It's so nice how you've still got them." Lin said taking a look at some of the photos.

"I take them everywhere I go. You guys are my idols. This was a show that put people like me on the stage. It's the reason why I'm here today, why I'm now in Hamilton."

"Well I'm glad we all inspire you, Josh. We are proud of you for doing what you could to get yourself to this point. Just one thing, look after Becky for us."

"Of course I will. She's an incredible girl and I can't wait to see her be in Hamilton herself in the next year." He wrapped an arm around me and gently kissed me. "I love you Becky."

"I love you too Josh." We got a round of awww's and my little sister wrapped both arms around my waist hugging me. We continued the conversation until it was time to leave. After various photos were taken I kissed Josh goodbye and he headed back to his apartment, as Mandy, Douglas, Maribelle and I got in the car to go home. I stayed silent the entire way home, sitting on my phone. I posted a picture of me and the entire principle cast from just before we went on stage.

'I had the night of my life performing with the original cast of In The Heights. Singing my favourite songs with my idols and my mom live onstage was a dream come true. #InTheHeights10!'

Once home I changed and went straight to sleep, hoping everything would be okay.
