When you woke up the next morning – night? Afternoon? You couldn't tell anymore – the tea on your nightstand had grown cold and it took you a while to find your way back into the reality you had been forced into.
In your head echoed voices of familiar people, the chirping of birds in the morning and the rustle of the wind in trees; and your sleepy brain struggled with the fact that you wouldn't hear those voices and sounds ever again. But after a while, you managed to sit up a bit and, without thinking, reached for the cup of cold tea to take a sip.
It was well brewed, and only the note that had been stuck beneath it reminded you of what happened the day before, ripping you out of the content, comfortable haze that normally surrounds people when they just woke up.
You put the cup down, crossed your legs and contemplated on what to do.The note seemed genuine, at least as much as you believed a demon could be genuine, and the first impression that you had gotten of Jin – friendly, tame, kind of humane even – still hadn't vanished from your memory. You were sure that to some extent, he really felt sorry for what happened.
On the other hand it probably wasn't a good idea to hang out like that with any of them for much longer. You played around with them on a close base for far too long, and had actually forgotten why and as what you came here: a prisoner, a trophy to be consumed.
Maybe this was a sign and an opportunity for you to stop talking to at least one of them.
Back in your normal life, you would've never even considered that someone could forget their near death, and at the same time you harshly reminded yourself that what you were experiencing right now wasn't even a life but just a short period of calm before the demons would decide they had enough of either you or their hunger. You were somewhere, somewhat in between alive and dead, a confusing state that probably no one else apart from the prior Chosen Ones could understand. You took another sip of the cold tea which was surprisingly refreshing and helped clear your mind from the shadowy figures that liked to dance in your head at night since you came to this place. It was as if the demons hadn't only penetrated your reality, but also your mind.
A knock on the door ripped you out of your thoughts. Startled, you wrapped yourself up in your blanket. "Who's there", you called after a few moments.
It took a while before your visitor replied.
"Jungkook."
You frowned. Over the course of your visit, the young man had barely spoken to you, let alone without anyone else around. "What do you want?", you therefore asked. You felt relieved that it wasn't Jin or Namjoon, but after everything that happened yesterday, you still felt uncomfortable.
You caught yourself almost wishing they would end this soon, and were terrified when you realized what you had just thought about.
Jungkook seemed to hesitate, but then gave in. "I wanted to check on you", you could hear his muffled voice. "It's almost noon and you haven't come out of your room yet."
You opened your mouth to give him some kind of excuse, but then stopped in your tracks. "Noon?", you asked. "How do you know?" There was no sunlight, moonlight or even any change of climate down here which would indicate a change of daytime, and you had struggled with keeping up a proper rhythm of life since you had arrived. You sincerely wondered how Jungkook could tell – even if you knew it probably didn't matter to a demon.
It was quiet for a while, then Jungkook's quiet, lifeless voice reached your ears once again.
"The shadows tell me."Is answer was so abstract that it caught your interest. Sitting up properly in bed, you frowned. "The shadows?", you asked. "How so?"
Jungkook's reply was quick. "You wouldn't understand", he said. "Now, are you coming out or not?"
You were quick on the tongue yourself and your reply just as sharp as his.
"Make me understand, and I'll come out."
A deep sigh behind the door, then a silent huff. "Fine. Entrance hall in twenty minutes." Jungkook paused for a second.
"And you're having breakfast beforehand."
You were too excited about the dubious shadows to notice how Jungkook was the first one in this row of demons who seemed to worry about you like a human. Instead, you quickly sprung out of bed and grabbed a few clothes to get ready.Fifteen minutes later, you were downstairs in the entrance hall. Jungkook was leaning against one of the cold stone pillars, eyeing you up and down as you approached him, then he nodded towards the dining room. "Breakfast first", he grumbled, and when you threw him a surprised glance – surprised, because he seemed to care, and surprised because a grumble indicated some form of emotion within the devil – his expression turned blank and his glance arrogant. "I don't really want you fainting on your way over there", he replied to your unspoken question. "Go. You have ten minutes."
With a roll of your eyes, you turned towards the dining room and entered, surprised to still find a big breakfast on the table. Maybe, just maybe, you thought as you sat down and grabbed some bread, you were too harsh on Jin. His note from the morning and this served breakfast showed that he held no grudge against you anymore, and it felt almost as if he was sorry.
You decided to approach him after your excursion with Jungkook, quickly finished your breakfast – you had been hungrier than you thought – and then hurried back to the entrance hall were Jungkook was still waiting in the same spot. When he saw you coming, he casually pushed himself off of the pillar and turned towards the entrance doors. "You ready?", he asked when you reached his side, and you nodded.
His glance lingered on your face for a few more seconds, then he shrugged, and the doors in front of you swung open slowly at a mere wave of his hand.
Magic tricks like this didn't impress you anymore, yet the enormous size of the outside cave did. Everytime you stepped out of the castle, it intimidated you anew, and Jungkook chuckled at the tension that vibrated around you.
"No worries, little one", he mused, redness sparking in his eyes for the first time since you had met him. "It's not far."
The glance you threw him clearly told him to stop belittling you, and his grin grew with obvious amusement. Yet he didn't say anything for the rest of the way. He just offered you his hand whenever there was a rocky part coming up, and after denying him the first times, at some point, you rested your hand in his palm for support and somewhere along the way forgot that you were beside a demon, not a man.
