CHAPTER 43: Unexpected Outings.
"I like the way you're everything I ever wanted."
-Taylor Swift.
The next two weeks go by in a blur, barely allowing me to breathe in solitude. The essays, assignments, practice, job and taking care of Emma and Will when Mum was working, kept me distracted almost every minute. It was like the day when Luke took me out, was one of my last moments at peace. Remembering that day brings a smile on my face every time I recall it.
Today was no better. Coach was making us work harder than ever for our away game coming in two weeks. From what I heard from the girls gossiping in the locker room, that the school we were up against team's Coach and our Coach always had bad blood in between them. To be honest I didn't doubt them one bit. I knew Coach was serious but this was on a whole new level. Sucks to be us. Specifically me, since he watched me like a hawk and warned me not to pull stunts like the last time. Eh whatever.
When I thought I could finally go home, Charlotte came strutting in and took Luke away which left me to my own devices to get home. To top it all, Kelly left her car back home and she was in a mood to walk cause the weather was fantastic according to her.
So here I am, walking—or more like dragging myself—next to her on the sidewalk, slurping the milkshake she used to buy me into walking with her. We walk in silence, she walks with a smile on her face and me sulking cause I feel my feet are going to fall off any minute.
“What's up with Charlotte and Lucas?”
There I asked it.
“I was thinking how long you'd take to ask that.” she smirks. “And you know, you must be the only one that gets away by calling him that.”
I smile.
“To be honest I don't know.” she kicks a rock and shrugs, “Their relationship is in every sense I can only call complicated.”
“They used to date, didn't they?”
She spares me a glance. “Yes. We all were friends in fourth grade. But then she started acting weird and we eventually stopped hanging out with her. But you know how Luke is, he never gave up on her. She lost her mum that time and he was there for her and then they suddenly started dating. But I think the only reason he agreed was because of guilt. Maybe he didn't want to hurt her anymore than she already was. But I know he never liked her.”
I nod and she continues.
“It was always an on-off kinda relationship. He called it off weeks after you came around. Maybe he finally realised what he wanted. And that wasn't her.” she winks at me cheekily. I look away with warm cheeks.
“But you know her. He moved on, she didn't. I don't get why girls get so damn attached.” she huffs. “Dignity should always come first.”
“Agreed.”
I ponder over what she said all the way back to home, momentarily forgetting my about-to-fall-off-legs. Which is good. Really good. When I walk inside the living room, it's a chaos. There goes my nap.
The triplets and Emma are on the couch watching Ferdinand, at the same time convincing their Mums why it's a good idea to adopt a bull or atleast a goat. Mum and Marie seem horrified and Will is going crazy laughing.
