Bakugou felt wholly uncomfortable where he sat for several reasons.
1. He never felt at ease in these types of fancy restaurants. The elitism that oozed off the other patrons with nothing better to do than spend their money at places like this made his brow twitch
2. The glass of wine that he hoped would ease his nerves seemed to be doing exactly the opposite
3. The small box in his pocket felt far heavier than he ever thought a jewelry box should
He stared at you across the table, flickering candlelight in the dimly lit atmosphere casting a warm glow across your face and bare shoulders that spread into his chest as his knee bobbed up and down rapidly under the silk tablecloth. You looked beautiful. How the hell he snagged you up before some other sap got the honor he still didn't know, but Bakugou wasn't about to complain.
"We don't go out to places like this often, Katsuki. And usually you aren't the one to suggest them," you joked while taking a sip of your own wine, a lipstick stain coating the edge of the crystal. "Did you do something that I don't know about and are trying to preemptively make it up to me?"
If he wasn't used to your smartass attitude by now he might actually be mad, but you could match his quips almost better than anyone. "The hell does that mean? Can't I just take you out? And no, I didn't fuckin' do anything, smartass."
You glared at him while the flickering candle flame danced in your eyes, highlighting the humor playing behind them before you laughed, tucking a strand of hair behind your ears. It was often the small, inconsequential gestures you made that drove Bakugou crazy. Fuck, he was in love with you.
Before long the food arrived, and the two of you fell into easy conversation...well, as easy as Bakugou could force out of him, anyway. His appetite felt empty from the nerves, knowing he couldn't wait much longer, but he forced the steak down with more wine, not bothering to hide his staring in your direction.
"Like something you see?" you joked again with a flirtatious wink. You knew his weak points but he'd never admit aloud how much he enjoyed your button-pushing. He'd save that for when the two of you got back home.
"Maybe," he replied with a smirk. Bakugou shifted in his seat and once again felt the velvet ring box in his pocket, bringing him back to reality. He was here for one distinctly sappy reason, and he wasn't about to screw it up.
He ordered dessert and, while the two of you waited, decided it was as good a time as any to get this over with. If it went badly - which he desperately hoped it didn't - he'd need that giant slice of chocolate cake to make it through the night in one piece.
"(y/n)," he started, his knee not bobbing at rapid speed while you look up at him with those beautiful eyes that he always wanted to wake up to.
"What's wrong, Katsuki? You look sick." If he had a weaker constitution he might just barf. Villains? No problem. Asking you to marry him? Severe anxiety.
"I'm not sick. I got something to ask you, though." You stared at him with rapt attention. "You know I love you, right?"
He said it rarely in such an open setting that the sudden flush in your cheeks made his own ears turn red, but the smile that followed set him at ease. "Yes, of course I do. I love you, too. What-"
"I'm not gonna drag this shit out or turn it into some stupid speech. You already know how I feel, we've been together long enough where it's not even a question at this point. But...I do have to ask..." With a shaking hand Bakugou pulled the box out of his pocket and held it out to you on the table. He watched you stare at it, eyes flickering between his face and the box while you held your breath.
"Katsuki..." you whispered, a hand coming up to cover your mouth as he opened the box with a flick of his thumb. The ring wasn't fancy, or big, or overly extravagant - but the cut and stones reminded him of you, of the color of your eyes and how you glowed in the early morning light, of your smile when he came home in one piece after a big fight. He picked everything out meticulously, making sure every part and design reflected you and only you.
"Well? What do you say?" he managed to spit out. It wasn't like he rehearsed at all in his head, but he couldn't take it back now. He watched your painted lips open...right before a large explosion rocked the restaurant and a rain of debris and dust rained down on the table and everyone inside.
Bakugou now sat in a stark white hospital room, his eyes tired and heavy but he refused to sleep until you woke up. He was looking at the swaying branches of a tree through the solitary window in the room when you stirred from your hospital bed.
"Oi, take it easy," he urged, rising out of his chair with concern in his eyes. You weren't terribly hurt, but he refused to leave until he saw your eyes open and knew that you were alright.
"Mmhm...Katsuki? What happened?" you groaned, your energy drained and the lights too bright for your liking. He explained in no short terms that he kicked the villain's ass responsible for fucking up dinner when you interrupted. "Oh...dinner..dinner! Oh my gosh, wait, you were-"
"They had to attack LAST NIGHT, they just had to screw everything up." Bakugou let his head fall into his hands thinking about how his plans were ruined by some assholes attempting to steal from a bunch of rich people eating dinner. Too bad for them that Ground Zero made reservations.
You reached over weakly and ran your fingers through his hair still covered in drywall and dust. "Yes," you said. He looked up with a questioning expression. "Yes," you repeated. "To your question at dinner."
Dawning realization sparkled in his ruby eyes, his energy returning momentarily. "Yes?!"
"Yes! Get the dust out of your ears."
"Don't sass me, brat!" he yelled far too loudly for a hospital while he dug desperately into his pants for the ring box. He'd almost lost the damn thing in the fight, taking out his frustrations on the villains directly.
Bakugou opened it, took out the ring, and slid it onto your finger. He had no clue about ring sizes, but it seemed his guessing game paid off when it didn't seem too tight or too loose. You held it up to the sunlight, and smiled that smile that he wanted to look at forever. "I get to sass you until the end of our days. Better get used to it."
