The rain continued to ease as the two of you made your way through the woods, slogging through flooded grass and crunching down fallen twigs from heavy wet branches overhead.

Bakugou kept his distance from you, eyes keen and ears alert. You'd saved him true to your word, but he didn't trust you fully. What if you had some devious plan of your own now that he was free and the sorcerer was no more? He'd rather die than succumb to any more subjugation in his lifetime.

Despite his aching stomach and weak muscles, Bakugou pressed on behind you. He could just run away and be free like he'd dreamt of for years at this point, but where the hell did he have to go? His pack had surely moved on by now; he truly was alone without even an abusive keeper watching over him. Hunger, medical aid, and a dangerous curiosity moved him forward as he followed the torchlight in your hand.

"It's not much further. Once we get home, we'll tend to our wounds and have a hot bath and warm dinner," you called back to him. Just the mental image of hot food made him salivate. He was only ever thrown cold meat, bones, and scraps. And a bath? The closest thing he ever got was washing in the rain. Fuck, he probably looked and smelled terrible...would he really want to see himself in anything other than a muddy puddle or dusty window reflection?

Why were you acting so nice to him? Were you expecting something in return? Hiding an ulterior motive? He had no strength left to fight if you turned on him, but this was possibly his only chance at a proper new start to his life.

"Why the hell do you live in the middle of the woods?" he asked, hating the silence of the woods cut aside only from his own heavy breathing and footsteps.

"I venture to town when I need supplies or information, but otherwise I like being alone. I listen to no rules other than the ones I make myself." The sound of complete bodily autonomy sounded like fucking heaven to him, but again he wondered how much he could trust your words and motives. "Shouldn't be...ah, finally!"

The rain had finally stopped though the sky was still veiled in shadowy grays with hints of orange and blue. Bakugou looked up to see a wooden cabin surrounded on most sides with trees. It looked small but anything might look small compared to the large stone prison-like castle he'd come from. A stack of soaked wood stood outside. Bakugou made note of everything around him to escape routes and, during the journey, had silently torn bark from trees with his claws to find his way back out if need be.

He watched you snuff out your torch and jog towards the cabin while he warily remained behind. You stopped at the door and looked back at him with a questioning expression. "Are you coming, Bakugou?"

Hearing someone else speak his name, a name he hadn't heard except from his own lips for years, felt odd...but he wanted to get used to it again. Hesitantly, he stepped forward but stopped once more before he got too close.

"Why are you offering aid to me, someone you don't know? What do you want?" he asked brusquely. Maybe he could weasel something out of you.

Instead, you just looked at him with those same kind eyes he stared into when he woke up in the mud and rain. "Not everyone is an asshole, you know. You're hurt and probably hungry and tired, right? I can't just leave you out here. Besides, you're the one who followed me." It was annoyingly true that he had followed you all the way here. His pride, normally pompous and brod, stepped down and let the logical need for food and shelter lead the way.

"Don't tell me what I need," he bit out while crossing his arms.

Rather than fight him, you just shrugged your shoulders and opened the door to your cabin before slipping inside. "Fine, you're free to do as you please. You aren't bound to me or anyone else anymore. Just know I make a pretty good stew." With that, you disappeared behind the door and Bakugou watched lanterns inside flicker on through the window.
