You walked before the court, head held high and a sword heavy with freshly-cleaned bloodstains at your side. A throne sat at the end of the room, tall and imposing, dressed in gold and red velvet.

Stopping before the steps leading up to the throne you knelt down, bowing your head before the King who stared down at you with tired eyes, his finger twinkling with jewels as he stroked the neatly-trimmed beard that grew from his square jaw.

"Your Majesty," you began with an even and confident tone. "I kneel before you on behalf of the summons to fighters and knights across your kingdom to slay the half-dragon annoyance that has plagued you for many years."

The King hummed in silent observation. "So you have. Tell me, what are your skills? How many monsters have you slain thus far? Prove to me you can accomplish what is required of you. And this...dragon is more than an annoyance. For over twenty years he's plagued me, set fire to villages and driven out traders and merchants...stand, knight. Show me your face."

Upon the King's order, you stood and removed the metal helmet. An immediate hush ran through the court, and the King narrowed his eyes. "A woman? Unconventional..."

"I assure you that my gender does not play a factor in my fighting skill. I have bested many men and monsters alike. I am no princess, I am a knight." You stood with your back straight and stiff while staring up at the King. It wasn't the first time you'd run into people skeptical of your skill, waving around comments that you should go home and bake or find a husband. When you challenged them to a duel they shut up quickly.

Sitting forward in his throne, the light cascading in a prism through the colored glass windows adorning the high stone walls of the castle, the King seemed satisfied enough with your answer...or he was just desperate. "I shall give you a chance, knight. To the west of here lies the lair of the half-dragon plague. He does not come every day but rather appears at random much to my chagrin. All we can do is defend, repair, and prepare. Go to the lair and return to me with his head within a month."

You blinked at the extended timeline. "I do not need-"

"You will need a month. No one has defeated him on their first try, or second, or fifth. I will give you this time to train, for you will need it. Bring me his head and you will be rewarded with more gold than you can carry." With a wave of his hand you were dismissed, his apprehension at your ability to do what no one else has quite palpable.

For the rest of the day you prepared, venturing into town to stock up on supplies and repair your gear. A blacksmith for your sword. A tailor for the clothes under your armor. The townsfolk provided little information when you inquired more about the half-dragon. They fled out of fear and only knew him as an endless menace. Some had lived their entire lives under his claws and knew no other life.

His terrorizing reign would end at the point of your blade.

You woke early in the morning at the local inn and gathered your things to leave before dawn. Once the sun rose the journey would be more difficult with the accompanying heat and dry air.

With dedication and stubbornness you managed to make it to the cave described to you before noon. It was foolish to go inside and trap yourself in his territory, so instead you decided to wait for him to come out.

So you waited...and waited...and waited.

"Does he only come out when he's attacking? Doesn't he need food and water?" Tearing off a piece of salted meat you sat and stared at the entrance. It had been hours at this point and the sun was about to set. You'd need to head back bef-

"Oi, who the hell are you?" A gruff voice startled you from behind. You stood up, dropping you food and pulled out your sword in one quick sweep to face whoever had been watching.
