You sat down in the library pouring over a book on the tactics used at Fódlan's Throat. Apparently this was important if you were ever to be a mage in defense against the Almyrans. Not that you cared to be. You didn't understand why this was important if you'd only be working for the Gloucester House. Though you weren't looking forward to that. But you didn't have much of a choice, so no use dwelling on it.
"So if I move the cavalry units here and then the archers attack from the west we'd... all die. That's it! This is pointless! I'm not good at this at all" You slammed your head onto the book with a thud.
"Whoa there. What did that poor book ever do to you."
You looked up and meet the forest green eyes of your house leader, Claude.
"It killed my hopes of passing that test tomorrow, that's what."
"The test is on tactics used at the east of the Alliance, right?" He rested his arms behind his head in a relaxed manor. You glared at him. "What? I didn't really study for it."
"Then why aren't you studying now?" you asked as Claude went around the table to sit beside you.
"Cause I've already read this book." he said flipping through the pages.
"Of course you have."
"And it's easy."
"You literally just said the two most infuriating things ever." you said in a calm way that contradicted your anger. "Now if you'll excuses me. Some of us aren't so gifted." You tried to take the book back, but Claude grabbed your hand before you could.
"No need to be so harsh." he smiled, his smile seemed so warm and sweet, yet like you'd noticed recently, it didn't seem to reach his eyes. "I'm going to help you."
"Who said I needed your help? I'll do just fine without any help." You were stubborn, but something told you he was worse.
"It wouldn't do to leave a lady such as yourself on her own. Anything less would be unbecoming of gentleman." Claude leaned in closer still smiling brightly.
"Oh, so now your a gentleman?"
"You wound me." he said dramatically placing his hand on his chest, finally letting go of your hand. "But whether I'm a gentleman or not, you can't deny that you need me. And I just so happen to be available."
You knew what he was doing. And it was working.
"Fine, fine. Help me. Go on." You set your cheek on you hand and leaned on the table.
Claude's smile widened, as if that was even possible, and he started to teach you about battle formations and what defenses would work best.
As he talked and and explained things you realized how smart he was. Not only that, but he seemed to know a lot about the attacks that had happened at Fódlan's Throat, but you guessed that as the next leader of the Alliance that was to be expected. As interesting as Claude was making this whole studying thing, you had your limit and began to drift off somewhere between his explanation on cavaliers and why Holst has secured so many victories.
You started daydreaming. Claude was always nice to you. Actually he was nice to everyone. He was to one day become the leading lord of the Leicester Alliance, and yet no one had ever heard of him until one year back. He seemed to come out of nowhere.
You remember Lorenz complaining about how his sudden appearance threatened the "noble order" or something like that. As much a you detested Lorenz and his rambling, you had to admit seeing him so panicked was kinda fun.
As you smiled to yourself, Claude finally realized your attention was somewhere else.
"Hey. Thinking about you boyfriend." he smiled teasingly.
"What? No! Eww! Claude that's not funny. Stop laughing!"
"Ok, ok." Claude said as he finally calmed down. "But you can't deny you weren't paying much attention."
"I was!" Claude raised an eyebrow "Ok, maybe I got a bit distracted at the end, but I did pay attention. This just isn't fun for me... I'm just a poor girl who's gifted at magic and got lucky. I don't belong here with all the knights and nobles."
"Now don't say that. You're a really smart girl. I noticed while you were actually answering my questions about formations and I've noticed it in class too. You, just, seem unmotivated for some reason."
The curiosity in Claude's eyes almost made you want to tell him everything... Almost.
"Like I said I just don't belong here, I'm only a bother." you frowned, something felt off ever since you came to the monastery you couldn't tell what, but it felt like there was something out of place. You had come to the conclusion the the only thing out of place was you.
"You know what? I refuse to believe that. And here I'll prove it to you." Claude pointed at the book where there was and illustration of an enemy formation. "What would be your plan here."
You looked at the book, then back to Claude, "I- I don't... If I answer I'll just make a fool out of myself."
"You won't and even if you do there's no way some one with your beauty and grace could ever look foolish."
"Ha! Suuure... I'll just believe that."
"You should. Now back to the book."
You sighed and stared at the page apprehensively. How bad could this be?
"I'd... I'd put the cavalry units here. If I have only two mages I would keep them behind the group protected, but still in range to attack, and the archers would be kept close to the armored units so that they'll be safe and able to take out the enemy more efficiently since the enemy normally uses wyverns."
Claude stayed silent, and stared at the page a while longer, he seemed deep in thought and that only made you more nervous.
When he finally smiled and spoke you let go of the breath you had been holding.
"That was exactly it! I'm impressed."
You smiled and hit Claude on the arm, not too hard, but it got the message across.
"Hey. What was that for?"
"You kept me in the dark for about half a minute, I was sure you were about to tell me how useless I was. What were you analyzing so much?"
"I was just astounded by your genius... and by my great teaching skills." He smiled jokingly
"Oh, ha ha. But I will admit you are a good teacher. I wouldn't have gotten this without you."
"I somehow don't think that's completely true, but hey it was kinda fun for me too. And now I know for a fact that you'll do great on that test."
You smiled at each other for a second longer.
"Well," Claude stretched his arms. "You should head to bed. Wouldn't want to sleep in tomorrow."
You gasped "What time is it?!"
"About midnight."
"What! Oh no, I've kept you here so long. I'm so sorry, Claude."
But Claude just smiled, he didn't seem to be in a rush. "I was happy to help. Besides I'm the one that insisted to help you in the first place.
"Well thanks again Claude," you said as you started to run out of the library. "See you tomorrow."
Claude smiled to himself as he realized you'd left the book on the table instead of placing it back on the shelf. You acted kind of silly when you were in a rush. He grabbed the book and headed out to his room. You clearly had some secrets, but he had a couple of his own.
