Takes place after "Your sister's fault".
.
"Brother, do I have to?" you whined.
"I would much rather you did not, but Flayn insisted it would be beneficial for you, and I believe she is right." Seteth answered much to your dismay.
You were not happy with this at all. Recently your sister had gone missing, resulting in what was probably the worst month of your life. Now that she was back, she had somehow convinced your brother to allow her to join the new professor's class.
But even more alarming was that she somehow convinced him to force you to join as well.
You were not some child that needed to be forced into social interaction! This was preposterous!
You would much rather keep your distance from people. Especially if said people were the Black Eagles.
Something about their house leader and her vassal made you feel uneasy. As if she knew something about you and she was judging you for it.
On top of that, the Black Eagles seemed to be the rowdiest of the houses. And let's not forget who was one of it's members.
Linhardt.
He had gone back to acting normally around you, but his gaze seemed to linger longer than it did before and the way he spoke to you sometimes had a certain softness to it.
"Y/N?"
You had zoned out while still in your brother's office. He was looking at you worriedly.
"Is everything alright?"
"Yes, it is. I will just need some time to adjust."
"If you are certain... Do not forget that you can tell me anything, my dear little sister.
You smiled, "I know, brother.".
You still didn't like the brother/sister facade, but you now understood why it was necessary more than you did before. And you were learning to see past it.
.
Your sister was truly on a roll today. First she gets you enrolled in the Academy and now there was a fishing competition being held.
You knew exactly where you weren't spending the afternoon.
You made your way to the library stumbling a few times. It got to the point were you finally had to stop and sit down.
You were light-headed and your entire body felt like it had been drained of it's energy.
While Flayn had been missing, your sleep pattern worsened. You barely slept at all and only when you were at the point of collapse. Like right now.
But you didn't want to sleep. What if something happened while you slept? You couldn't allow that.
So you got up and walked on determined.
Unfortunately, determination didn't mean a lack of gravity. You stumbled again and you would have gotten a mouthful of dirt and grass had someone not caught you in time.
"Careful. Are you alright?"
Linhardt looked at you with worried eyes and you nodded. You tried to stand up again, but you stumbled once more.
"You are not alright." he said, still helping you stand. "How long has it been since you slept?" he asked in a slightly accusatory tone.
"I do not know."
"You don't know?"
"I mean, it does not matter."
"Yeah, no. That's enough. Come with me."
"Hey!" Linhardt took your hand and started dragging you along.
He led you to a grassy clearing in the forest area that surrounded the Monastery. You could hear the distant chirping of birds and it was a perfect mix of shady and breezy.
"The perfect place to take a nap." Linhardt said sitting down and patting the ground beside him.
A nap? Oh, you could see where this was headed and you didn't like it one bit.
"I am sure there are better places to take a nap than on the ground." you said crossing your arms and averting your gaze.
"You just don't want to take a nap." he accused.
At your lack of acknowledgement he sighed, "You don't have to sleep if you don't want to. Let's just lie here and talk for a while." he offered.
After a moment's hesitation you relented. Feeling unsure you laid down and turned towards Linhardt who was a few feet away.
"Why are you so afraid of sleeping?"
"The last time I slept for a long time, I woke up and my mother was dead." You didn't know if it was the sleepiness messing with your head, but you didn't feel like hiding anything right now.
"I imagined it must be something like that."
"Really?"
"Really. I've caught on to more things than you realize."
You let out a yawn, "So you say."
"You don't have to carry around such a heavy burden." he said seriously.
You frowned, "I do not have a choice."
"Maybe before," he said thoughtfully, "But now, you have me. Whenever you're asleep, I'll keep watch and make sure you have nothing to worry about."
"I can not ask you to do that."
"You don't have to. I've already decided."
You stayed in silence. Gazing at each other with a feeling you couldn't quite understand.
In a moment of sheer boldness, you got closer to Linhardt. As close as you could get without touching him.
"Thank you." you whispered, "Thank you for being my friend."
With those words you finally allowed yourself to sleep.
.
Linhardt watched you with an unspoken emotion. He smiled gently.
'Thank you for being my friend.' you had said. If only we could be something more, he thought.
He got comfortable on his back and stared at the sky, determined to stay awake so you could finally rest peacefully.
He felt you shift and looked over. In your sleep you seemed to have snuggled up to him, holding his arm for comfort.
He smiled once more; he wasn't about to complain.
