Dimitri could not comprehend what came over him.
He hated this woman. The very thought of her filled him with an amount of rage he had never thought possible. He wanted to see her and that monster she called "sister" suffer for what they had done. They should be made to pay in kind for the slaughter they had brought. And he would be justice's executioner. He wanted nothing more than to tear their heads from their shoulders with his own two hands.
And yet…
Seeing her collapse as she had… Her hair framing her face, like a vibrant white halo on a fallen angel as she lay on the ground, tears staining her sun deprived skin…
All he could see was that young girl he had once known. That girl who's laugh could cheer him up in the darkest of days. That girl who's shyness he found endearing.
That girl who had been his first love.
And his first reaction was to quickly check her pulse. Telling himself it was only to assure himself she was dead. He had no care in his heart left for her. She could not be forgiven.
Still he found himself relieved upon confirming she was not dead.
"Is this how you avenge us?"
"By aiding the woman who is responsible for our deaths?"
Dimitri clutched his head in agony, "I KNOW! I know!" he answered the voices, "But it would not be a true fulfilment of my promise if I did not kill her by my own hand!"
He tried his best to not listen to the words they said next as he lifted the woman before him, and carried her in his arms to where he had set up a makeshift camp.
The camp, if you could call it that, was merely a small fire surrounded by rocks at the entrance of a shallow cave-like indentation in the side of a large rock formation.
There was barely enough room in the "cave" to keep one safe from the elements. If wind blew in it's direction as it rained, whoever was unfortunate enough to seek refuge in such a place, would have surely been soaked.
He placed the unconscious girl as close to the stone wall as he could, to ensure she would be covered if it did decide to rain or snow.
She had always been susceptible to the cold. It would not help her recover any sooner if she were to be exposed to it.
Hours passed and Dimitri sat in silence. He watched the dancing flames in front of him as they mimicked the fury within his head.
It grew colder as he sat there and the girl was yet to stir. She gave no signs of waking any time soon.
Then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw movement. He turned briskly, ready to strike if need be. But he calmed as he saw she was simply shivering. He took off his fur cape and placed it on top of her smaller form. It would keep her warm. And the weather was not so bad that he could not handle being without it.
"Disgusting. You show compassion to a woman who took part in countless slaughters?"
"It is not like that, Glenn." Dimitri growled in response, "She will only remain alive as long as it is necessary for her to truly learn what suffering is."
