Takes place after "Empty".
.
There knelt the Emperor; the dark power of her combined crests flaking off of her. Dimitri stood in front of her.
Felix held your hand as you watched from afar. He knew you needed the extra strength. You were still grieving, and, though on most days you still felt empty, you pushed past it as best you could to help your friends.
"El..." you heard Dimitri say. He extended his hand towards her.
It seemed nearly unbelievable that this was the same man that screamed about having her head.
After an uncomfortably tense moment, Edelgard made her move. Everything went so fast in that moment.
Edelgard drew her dagger, which, in your opinion, was a stupid gift to give your enemy, Dimitri gripped his lance and Byleth readied the Sword of the Creator.
Felix quickly let go of your hand in order to hold you by your waist, because, as he had clearly predicted, you tried to run towards Dimitri.
You heard the sickening sound of a blade piercing flesh and instantly held your breath.
After a nauseating few seconds, Edelgard fell limp. And Dimitri removed the dagger from his chest.
You took a shaky breath and Felix let go of you. Upon seeing the amount of blood on the dagger and realizing how deep the wound must have been, you took a step forward.
Felix took your hand again and shook his head.
You walked away with your brother and left Dimitri in Byleth's capable hands.
.
A month passed and Dimitri and Byleth worked to rebuild Fódlan.
You, on the other hand, couldn't bring yourself to leave your home.
You felt guilty, but...
You just couldn't bring yourself to face the world.
So many things were different...
So many people were gone...
Knock, Knock, Knock
Except the one you wished would leave you alone for more than two seconds!
You didn't want him gone forever, but if he could leave you be for an hour, that would be great.
"Leave me alone, Felix! I already told you I'm not hungry!"
The door opened slowly, "It's not Felix."
"Dimitri!" you said once you saw the king. You were suddenly self-conscious about your hair, which you hadn't brushed in three days. Even though you were sure he had seen you looking worse. "Yeah, well..." you looked to the side, "I'm still not going to eat."
He shook his head with a smile, "I did not expect you too."
You frowned, still not looking at him, "Why are you here? Surely you have more important things to fix, Your Majesty."
Dimitri frowned as well, "You are not broken, Y/N."
You scoffed, "I beg to differ. There are some days I don't even want to get out of bed. And I wouldn't, were it not for my brother refusing to let stay there."
"I don't believe that sitting on the floor in front of your bed was what Felix had in mind." he said as he sat down next to you with a sad smile.
Then he took on a more serious demeanor, "If you are broken, then I must be beyond repair."
Your brows furrowed, "No, Dimitri!", you shook your head. "You, you are going to be a great king... You already are."
Your voice broke, "Me... I just sit here, trying to forget that I'm supposed to be right there with you. I'm supposed to be helping you! I'm, I'm... I can't even help myself! If it wasn't for Felix I would... I would have... I..." you lost the ability to speak as you broke into tears.
.
Dimitri hesitated, he didn't expect this reaction. But now he realized he had been foolish to not expect such a reaction.
You had been bottling up your feelings for so long, never truly allowing yourself proper time to heal. You put aside your health for your homeland... For him.
Sure you had cried before, and you said you felt better a couple of days after you did, but it should have been obvious to him that that wasn't enough time to heal.
He should have known that better than anyone.
But he had been too distracted; first by his blood lust, then by his guilt.
And now he had thrown himself fully into repairing the whole of Fódlan.
Felix had insisted he let him focus on you, while he fulfilled his duty, but he shouldn't have listened.
He needed to correct his mistakes; all of them.
.
Tears streamed down your face as you kept your eyes trained on the floor. You felt Dimitri take your hands in his, but you still couldn't bring yourself to look at him.
"You have no idea how much you help me already."
"W-what?"
"You have no idea how much you help me. Just by existing." you could hear the affection rolling off of his words. But you didn't think you deserved it.
You shook your head, but Dimitri wasn't having it.
He brought your hands closer to himself and held them tighter as he leaned down. "You are the reason I wake up in the morning. You are the reason I keep moving forward, even when I think the weight of my sins is too much to bare. You, Y/N. You are my Queen whether you marry me or not." He placed a tender kiss on your joint hands, "You have helped me carry the weight of my grief for so long, now please, I beg of you, let me help you carry the weight of yours."
You leaned closer to him, "I don't want to be a burden. You have so much on your shoulders already..." you whispered.
"You could never be a burden. You make my days better just by being in them." he replied as he rested his forehead against yours.
You both stayed silent as you waited for your tears to subside.
When they finally did you spoke up, "I'm sorry, for... All of this, Dimitri."
"Please do not apologize. You have done nothing wrong."
"...I don't know when I will get better." you added sadly.
"I want you to take as long as you need to. No less." he said, "Besides, I have some getting better to do myself. I am not saying my pain is the same as yours, nor am I saying that I fully understand what you are going through. I only want to let you know that I am here for you and that I will never judge you for anything."
You chanced a glance upwards, towards his eyes. You saw how his visible one sparkled; filled with love.
You smiled slightly, "What did I do to deserve you?"
"Probably something bad if it stuck you with me." he joked.
You shoved his chest playfully, "Don't say that, you idiot."
You both laughed a bit, not the happiest or heartiest laughter, but laughter nonetheless.
When you finished, you looked at each other; love and warmth radiating off of both of you.
Dimitri gently leaned in and you almost reciprocated the action, before coming to your senses and covering his lips with your hand.
"Wait! My breath is probably terrible right now."
Dimitri caringly removed your hand from his face and smiled lovingly, "I don't care."
He leaned back down to kiss you and you kissed back with a smile.
No, life wouldn't be easy. Sometimes it would even seem impossible. But, no matter what, you were in it together.
