"Ferdinand! Stop it!"

Your brother was at it again. He insisted on challenging the Imperial Princess.

"My dear little sister, it is my duty as the future Prime Minister to make sure our ruler is of an acceptable caliber."

"But you know it makes me uncomfortable. I already have enough trouble interacting with other nobles as it is; it does not help me for you to go around making enemies."

"We must never shirk from our noble duties, Y/N. Especially not because of unfounded fear."

You pouted, frustrated.

"Please, brother. Both you and I know that you don't care about besting Edelgard that much anymore. At least, not as much as you do about impressing Hubert."

Ferdinand's face turned bright red. If he were any redder he'd be a tomato.

"If that's how you wish to play it... Then I'll have you know it is quite clear that your nervousness around Edelgard is much more than just your shyness." he replied smugly.

"F-Ferdinand!"

Just as you were about to die from embarrassment, a hand was placed on your shoulder causing you to jump with a start.

"Apologies." said a leveled female voice from beside you, "I hope I am not interrupting anything. But I had hoped to speak privately with Y/N for a few moments."

"By all means." Ferdinand said before you could complain. As he walked away he shot you a wink and mouthed "Good luck."

You let out a heavy sigh. You were going to strangle him... No. Wait. That would mean you'd inherit the all the responsibilities of House Aegir...

Ferdinand was safe.

For now...

"Y/N?" Edelgard spoke suddenly, startling you again.

"Y-yes? Your Highness?" you turned towards her but kept your gaze on the floor.

"I have noticed you seem quite... uneasy whenever I am near. I was hoping you could enlighten me as to why that is."

Edelgard's voice was calm. It held no trace of anger. But maybe a little sadness...?

"I, um, I," you took a deep breath trying to calm yourself, "I am uneasy around most people, I apologize if I have offended you, Your Highness." You managed to speak coherently, but as much as you tried, you couldn't get your voice to sound louder than just barely above a whisper.

"Not as much as you are with me." she said and you could not argue. "You do not even look at me..."

She took a step towards you and you tensed, hopefully your growing anxiousness was not noticeable.

"Am I truly so frightening to you?" Edelgard asked, sounding the slightest bit vulnerable. And coming from her, that shocked you to your core.

"O-of course not! I just..." You looked up at her before your brain had time to protest, but as you started speaking, you started to lose your nerve.

"You just...?" Edelgard prompted.

You shifted your gaze to the ground and continued speaking, but with a much smaller voice, "I just think you are really great. And I don't want you to dislike me. But my brother is sure to have made you hate anything related to House Aegir by now and..."

You trailed off, fearing you had said too much. You slowly started sinking into your own self doubt.

A kiss on the cheek brought you back from the depths of your mind.

You looked up at Edelgard, eyes wide in shock. She, on the other hand, wore a tender smile.

"I assure you," she started, "you have no reason to worry." Her smile became slightly bashful and her cheeks grew pink as she continued to look into your eyes. It almost felt as if she could see into your soul, the way she was looking at you.

Your face heated up immensely, "I, uh... I don't know what to say, Your Highness."

"You need not say anything. Just promise me something." You nodded as she continued speaking, "Try to not shy away from spending time with me. And, please, call me Edelgard. ...Or El if you'd like."

"Oh, I... Um..." you sputtered a bit as you processed all she had just said. You lowered your gaze once more, but this time you smiled, completely involuntarily mind you, and tucked a strand of your hair behind your ear with a blush. You then looked up and tried your best to sound confident, "Okay, I'll try... El."
