"Brother!" you yelled as you ran into the office.
The green haired man behind the desk sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Y/N." he began, "What is it?"
You crossed your arms and huffed, "Seteth, is that anyway to speak to your darling little sister?" By the end of that sentence your angry facade was cracking.
Seteth, in response, sighed again, "Would my 'darling little sister' care to tell me what this rude interruption is about?"
You smiled and rolled your eyes, "Oh, brother. You need to lighten up. I just wanted to share my excitement with you!" you said cheerfully. You would be bouncing up and down had it not been for your experience with Seteth's disapproving glares. So you walked towards him and put your hands on his desk to keep yourself grounded. "Lady Rhea just asked me to show one of the new house leaders around Garreg Mach as soon as they arrive."
Your brother seemed unimpressed, "Is that all?"
You almost stomped your foot like a child, "Do not belittle my emotions, brother. I barely get to interact with anyone besides you and Flayn. I will go mad if I do not socialize more!"
Seteth looked at you. His expression held one thing: annoyance. He was busy and you were interrupting him. Besides...
"Should you not then be with Lady Rhea at the moment?"
You blinked at him, "No. I believe they are set to arrive at sundown. Why would...?"
"Look out the window."
The beautiful sky of orange and yellow hues filled your view. And your eyes widened.
"Oh my, I'm going to be late!"
And so you ran off, leaving your brother to shake his head with a chuckle as he continued his work.
.
"...to show you around the grounds. She should be here at any--"
"I'M HERE! I'm here!" you exclaimed as you ran into the room, "I apologize for being late."
Rhea smiled warmly at you and spoke in a gentle voice, "You are here now and that's what matters." She then gestured to the other people in the room, "This is Princess Edelgard Von Hresvelg and this is Hubert Von Vestra. This is Y/N. She is to show you around. No one is more well adapted to the grounds than her; you're in good hands. Now if you'll excuse me."
As Lady Rhea left, you turned your attention to the people that you would be showing around.
Edelgard was definitely a princess. You could practically see "regal" written in her every movement. Hubert stood beside her. Like a dark shadow. Something about the way he was looking at you was unsettling.
You bowed cordially and greeted them, "Hello. It is a pleasure to meet you."
Edelgard spoke, "The pleasure is mine. Y/N, correct?"
You nodded and began to lead them outside.
Your speech was animated as you explained everything to them. The dorms, the classrooms the dining hall, etcetera. They mostly just listened silently. It didn't take long for their silence to make you somewhat uncomfortable.
Had you said something wrong? Did they not like you for some reason?
You were probably reading too much into it but their lack of response was undoubtedly discouraging. Still you kept up your tour, fighting the urge to nervously tuck your hair behind your ear.
Edelgard only spoke again when you were infront of the statues of the saints in the cathedral.
"The saints of the church of Seiros. What can you tell me about them?"
Her tone was odd. Not as if she was eager to learn. It was more like she was looking for something specific.
You brushed it off as your own apprehension making you imagine things. If there was a topic that was easy to discuss for you, it would be this one.
"Saint Macuil, Saint Indech, Saint Cichol, Saint S/N and Saint Cetheleann. They fought along side Saint Seiros and helped establish the church."
"I've read about their feats. Some of the things described could be considered above human capabilities."
There was a coldness to her voice but you answered nonetheless, "Well, I wasn't there all that time ago... So I can only guess that they must have had the goddess' blessing. Oh, but if you want to know more about this I recommend asking my older brother, Seteth. He is very well versed in the teachings of Seiros."
Edelgard nodded, "I shall keep that in mind."
You fidgeted for a moment but still you continued until you reached their dorm rooms.
"Here we are. This is where you'll be staying while you remain at Garreg Mach." You awkwardly considered your next words, "I hope we can be friends going forward, Edelgard."
Hubert seemed as if he was about to say something but Edelgard stopped him, "That would be nice. Thank you for showing us the grounds. If you'll excuse us, it's been a long day."
"Oh, um, sure." You quickly squeaked out, awkwardness all but forgotten. You scurried away, bidding them farewell and good night.
.
Edelgard turned to Hubert as you fled out of view.
"Lady Edelgard, are you sure this course of action is prudent? I must advice against getting attached to--"
"Getting attached is not my intention, Hubert. As callous as it may seem, to achieve my goal I must build bridges, even if they are fated to be torn down. That is all."
Hubert nodded and turned to enter his room just as Edelgard turned to enter hers.
Truly. You should be more guarded.
You never knew the intentions that slithered in the dark, just out of view.
