Takes place after "Rest".
.
The wind blew ominously. The sky shone solemnly. The ground was painted red.
You stood in front on a man you had thought dead. The kindness his eyes once held, long ago forgotten.
You had gotten ahead of the others, partly on orders of the professor, but to be honest you would have done so regardless.
While Claude and Byleth handled the Emperor, you were supposed to keep this Lion at bay.
But how could you fight someone you had been desperate to hug for so long?
"Dimitri, please, stop this! No good will come of it." you pled.
"That woman is the reason our father was slain! I will not rest until I have her head!" he answered. His voice was rough.
"This reckless advance you insist on will get you killed!" You held out your arms attempting to block his path.
"Move out of my way or be cut down." his voice was low and menacing.
He raised his lance and you held your breath. But before anything could be decided and arrow pierced the air and cut through the side of Dimitri's arm, making him recoil.
"I knew siblings fought but this takes it a bit far don't you think?" said a smooth voice that came to rest beside you.
"Claude?"
He winked from atop his Wyvern, "Come on, Princess, you didn't really think you had me fooled did you?"
Dimitri moved forward again and Claude raised his bow.
"Calm down, Dimitri! What does it achieve us killing each other here?"
"Move, Claude. I have no time to exchange words with you."
You were too worried by the warring men infront of you to notice the sword that swung at you.
As you fell down in pain your attacker was quickly taken out by an arrow.
You tried to get up again to no avail, "Ouch, ok, yeah, no. That's not happening."
"Are you ok?" Claude asked while still keeping a wary eye on Dimitri.
"Other than the blood loss and heartbreak? Yeah, I'd say so."
Dimitri made to walk past Claude again and this time he met no resistance.
"Dimitri..." You called out, "Please. I lost my father don't make me loose my brother."
The prince faltered almost imperceptibly and kept on the war path.
You lowered your gaze to the ground. The pain in your chest made all other injury feel numb.
You felt yourself be lifted and looked at Claude.
"I can walk."
Claude scoffed, "Ok, sure." But he didn't place you down.
You were too exhausted to argue.
.
Days later at the monastery you laid on your bed, hiding under the covers. You had skipped another war meeting. This was the fourth time this week.
The covers were unceremoniously thrown off of you and in response you hid your face with your pillow.
"Rise and shine, Princess! Time to get up!"
You wanted to hit him.
"Stop calling me that. Also, get out."
You felt your fluffy shield get tugged on and you held on trying to save it from Claude's grasp.
After a while of back and forth your pillow was gone, "Nooooo..." you whined.
"Come on." Claude said as he lifted you into his arms.
"Claude, no!"
"Stop whining, you have barely been out of this room recently. It's not healthy for you." He walked out, headed towards the forest. "Have you even had anything to eat today?"
"I was going to..." you said crossing your arms and pouting.
"It's nearly sunset."
You rolled your eyes, "You've made your point, now put me down. I can walk."
Claude smirked, "Run, you mean." he said, "Run right back to your room. How about I just carry you and we can avoid any inconveniences." he finished with his signature wink.
You groaned.
"Come on, isn't this the fairy tale moment girls dream of? A princess carried off into the sunset by her charming prince?" he joked.
"I'm not a princess, and you're hardly a prince." you answered unamused.
He chuckled, "If only you knew."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
He didn't answer.
When Claude finally stopped walking you took a break from frowning to examine your surroundings.
You remembered this tree. This tree haunted your nightmares.
You were sure your face was completely red at this point.
Claude looked at you and his smile widened.
If he remembered, and you doubted he didn't, he must have been enjoying your suffering.
He climbed the tree wordlessly and held his hand out for you. You took it and you both sat silently staring at the orange sky.
"So is the embarrassment supposed to over shadow the depression or...?" you asked sarcastically.
His smile faltered.
"I'm sorry about your brother." He took your hand comfortingly. "But Hilda didn't see him following Edelgard's troops, so that might mean he's still out there."
"I hope so..."
You looked out towards the horizon. The last time you saw this view you had confessed your feelings to Claude... And he had rejected you.
You cringed at the memory.
"I'm sorry."
You looked at Claude questioningly as he stared ahead, "For what?"
"What you were just thinking about."
"Are you suddenly a mind reader?" you chuckled.
He closed his eyes and smiled, "No, but I could tell."
You wrapped your arms around yourself and looked at the ground, "What are you sorry for? You didn't do anything wrong."
"I made a mistake that night."
You looked up at him surprised, "A mistake? What do you--"
You were cut off suddenly by a pair of lips meeting yours.
You were shocked, but you didn't waste much time throwing yourself into his arms and kissing him back.
This lasted for a while and you nearly fell out of the tree in the process.
When you finally both stopped to take a breath Claude was beaming. His smile was more sincere than you had ever seen it be before and you thought it made him look even more handsome.
"I got to admit," he said, "I had expected you to have moved on already. But I am so glad that you didn't."
"I was convinced you thought of me as a little sister. But now I think that conclusion was horribly misguided." you smiled.
He laughed, "Yeah, maybe so."
You shared a laugh and stayed together in a comfortable silence for a while until Claude winked at you with a slight smirk. "So, want to do that again?"
You giggled, "Maybe let's get off of the tree first."
