It was a dark, moonless night. You strode through musty corridors; every so often peering into lonely rooms in which only lichen seemed to reside. You could hear the wooden structures from the marketplace creaking. And the drip-drop of dew rolling off the mist covered rocks only helped to make you more aware of your loudly beating heart.
But you pressed on. It was half-past midnight. Everyone was sound asleep. Everyone but you… and the one you were tracking.
Tracking might not have been the correct word. More like stumbling, blinding through eerie halls foolishly hoping to find that which you sought.
Here, deep below the unassuming monastery, the dark of night was nearly all encompassing. The perfect place for those who have been shunned by the light to seek refuge.
If only you weren't paralysingly afraid of the dark.
You looked over your shoulder as you ventured towards the library. You felt like you were being followed. Probably just your imagination… You entered the library, looking behind you once more, seeing nothing but seemingly endless darkness.
A momentary gust of wind made your skin crawl. It was almost as if something had just… but no. You were alone. You looked around again just to make sure. You were alone. You took a deep breath and took a few calculated steps into the silent room.
The wafting aroma of ink and old parchment, however, made you immediately regret your decision to come here. It only fueled your imagination, aiding it in creating frightening monsters out of shifting shadows, which danced along to the wave of the meager candlelight.
No, no… This was quite fine. This was about as much as you could handle at the moment. You really should have just stayed in bed and tried to go back to sleep. But after what had awoke you… You really had no choice, but to find…
But, no. None of that mattered now. You had tried, but enough is enough. The fear of what hid in the shadows far outweighed the fear of that which awoke you. You were sure that, after this ordeal, once you were out of this nightmarish void of shadows and light tricks, you would be able to go soundly back to sleep.
You turned around and it felt as if your heart dropped into the pit of your stomach. It really was an endless, dark void. Just the thought of having to trek through it made shivers run down your spine.
But you had gone through it before just to get here. Everything had been fine moments ago. Surely it would be fine now.
... right?
With a new reluctantly courageous resolve you took your first steps into the unseen.
You were starting to feel more confident. Less afraid. But just then, the feeling of something creeping up behind you shocked you right back into the horror story you were living.
You shut your eyes, took a breath and stepped forward once more. Nothing had been there all the other times you'd felt a presence. Nothing was there now. You weren't going to indulge your fears by turning around once more.
You felt proud of yourself for avoiding the anxiety infused action. That is, until you felt something cold, something solid, press into your sides threateningly. But it was more than just one. You did not currently have the necessary mental presence to count how many there were. It was bloodcurdling. As if small, blunt daggers were attempting to dig into you. You felt yourself stop breathing. Surely a prelude for your demise.
A glass-shattering scream was ripped from your throat, as your attacker said only one word.
"Boo!"
You clutched your chest, nearly in tears, as the "monster" that had been stalking you erupted into infuriating, uncontrollable laughter.
You turned right around and smacked the "monster"'s arm. He flinched a bit away but it did nothing to curb his amusement.
"Yuri!"
But the man wouldn't stop laughing.
"It's not funny!" you were getting really frustrated with him.
"Well," he said in-between chuckles, "you didn't see your face!"
He continued laughing. As if the thought of whatever expression you had made renewed his glee.
Jaw and fists clenched, you turned around and started angrily marching towards your room.
Sobering up slightly Yuri called out from behind you, "Wait! Ha, ha… Y/N come back! Heh…"
You made a not-so-nice hand gesture at him without turning around and kept walking.
He could stay alone with the dark if he liked it so much!
Before you could make it more than 10 meters away, however, you felt two arms latch around your shoulders and pull you backwards so your back came in contact with a chest.
You tried to get away, but Yuri only held you tighter.
"I'm sorry, Y/N. I just couldn't resist. It was too funny." Yuri muttered in a strained way, clearly holding back his laughter.
"No. You're not. Can you let me go now?"
He tightened his grip around you as he began to laugh again, "Come on, Y/N! It was funny!"
"You know what else is funny." you said suddenly as he continued to laugh, "Make-up. Splashing and skipping along the lake, until it stops, slowly sinking into the water, dissolving, never to be seen again.
His laughter stopped abruptly. You smirked.
"You wouldn't."
"I would."
He turned you around to face him with a serious look on his face. His serious look slowly morphed into a smirk, causing you to lose your own.
"It's just make-up," he said, his nonchalant attitude infuriating you, "I can always just get more."
"Yuri, let go of me or I will hurt you."
"You don't have any weap-- OW! What the hell?!"
You had turned your head to the side and bit Yuri's arm. He let go pretty quickly after that.
"What can I say? This wolf's got a wicked bite!" you started laughing, proud of how you turned that situation around.
Yuri let you laugh for a while before approaching you and putting his hands on your shoulders. You looked up at him and saw he had a soft smile on his face.
"Ready to forgive me now? Since you've gotten your revenge and all."
You pouted stubbornly and averted your eyes, "I'll think about it."
"I'll take what I can get. Now, let's get you to bed. I'll keep away the nightmares."
