matches, wax and forgetting

they were a match made in heaven

and they were so lovely in the way that they
burned together,
their fire was spontaneous

they fed off of each other the way
fire grows when put together with
another flame

sparks flew, but gravity pulled them down and
the embers lit the
dried grass on which they stood

lucky for them, it didn't matter,

when the world was up in flames.

they stood by and watched and
he kept growing and
thriving off of the
flames that licked his chapped lips and
kissed his charcoal nose

but as the flames became
ever-growing,
she began to fear,
as she was not made of
the ash that covered his body.

his fire burned the pages in the story
that was her life,
her memories,
her future.

and in no time at all,
her heart became wax and melted in days,
she lost the fire,
she lost the love,

he had changed too much,
she saw nothing.

she didn't recognize the once kind and gentle boy

turned into a raging flame spreading
disaster and pain wherever she turned.

he had forgotten to keep pretending,
and she had forgotten who she had fallen for.

oh,

how unfortunate it is,
that people pretend,
and candle wax melts
and book pages burn
and people forget
and matches burn out
from end to end
in the same way
that hearts do.
