Sophie Foster wasn't normal, even by elvin standards.

For one thing, she was exceptionally pretty, with long blonde hair and gold-flecked brown eyes, which was unusual for elves, who were all born with blue eyes.

Almost all elves had a special ability, and while it was rare, some elves even had two.

But Sophie had five.

She was a telepath, polygot, teleporter, inflictor, and enhancer.

And she had a complicated history before she was born.

She had been researched, planned, and carefully created to be the elf she was by an organization known as the Black Swan. Her genetics were modified to give her these many abilities, and for as long as she could remember, she had been hidden away.

She was a secret weapon.

Sophie knew that war was happening all around her safe sanctuary at Havenfield. Her adoptive parents, Grady and Edaline, told her not to worry. That the war wasn't her problem.

But she couldn't sit still in her protection while other elves were dying.

She wanted to help.

Mr. Forkle, one of the Black Swan's leaders, had given her strict orders. Don't leave Havenfield, don't come into contact with anyone other than trusted members, and definitely, absolutely, do not leave to take part in a war in which death is inevitable and the outcome is not yet clear.

And even though Sophie had friends who came to visit her, she was sick of waiting.

Of hiding.

She wanted to make a difference.

But how??
