Sophie's head was still spinning as she wandered around Havenfield later that day. The revelation of a new member was a lot to handle on its own, but a member that was also related to two of her friends?
That was unbelievable.
Biana hadn't hailed Sophie after she'd supposedly confronted and told Fitz about Alvar. She didn't know if it had ended well.
Sophie had called Fitz multiple times, but he hadn't picked up any of them. Either his Imparter was broken, or he was ignoring her.
Probably the latter.
Despite this, Sophie had left him several messages to come and meet her.
Maybe she just didn't know when to quit.
Sophie sighed, flopping down on the grass and throwing her Imparter on the ground. She had enough going on.
She must have fallen asleep in the warm sunlight, as she woke up when she heard a voice calling her.
"Sophie? Sophie! Oh gods, there you are!"
She was greeted by a dimpled elf, although his dimples weren't present now. Instead, he had a worried look on his face. "Grady and Edaline were looking for you. They were panicking when I came?"
"Were they?" Sophie blinked sleepily, and rubbed her eyes. Ugh. WHY did the sun have to be so BRIGHT?
Dex rolled his eyes. "Yes, they were." He said, sitting down next to her.
"So what did you come here for?"
Dex smiled somewhat sadly. "I can come here because I'm missing my best friend, can't I?"
Sophie felt as though he had struck her. She had been neglecting all her friends, at least since Keefe. Heck, she hadn't spoken to Tam and Linh since the Healing Center.
And Dex, well, she hadn't even tried to make any attempt to contact him since his and Linh's mission.
She definitely won the award for World's Worst Best Friend.
"Hey, hey, none of that," Dex objected when Sophie tried to apologize. "I get that you're busy. You have missions and meetings and other friends and, well, Keefe.
"And anyway," he continued when Sophie tried to interrupt, "Linh and Tam and I have become sort of a friend group since that mission. I think. Probably. I mean, Tam's as angsty as ever, but he tries to be nice. At least I think so." Dex scrunched up his nose. "I'm probably overthinking this."
Sophie giggled. "Maybe a little. But I am sorry," she motioned for Dex to shut up when he tried to stop her again. "I'm being serious. You guys are amazing, and I really don't know what I'd do without you."
Sophie wondered if that was a little too mushy. But Dex grinned, dimples showing, and she knew it had been fine.
They were best friends, after all.
And nothing would change that.
"Hey, you know what would be....."
"Huh?" Sophie asked when he trailed off. He was staring at something in the distance, and Sophie turned to see what it was.
Not what.
Who.
Mr. Forkle was approaching them, his face unreadable.
When he was finally in earshot, he opened his mouth to speak, his words coming out firm.
"We have an emergency meeting at Everglen, and we need everyone there."
"Especially you, Miss Foster."
