Lady Gisela's words echoed through Keefe's mind.
Stupid.
Failure.
Disappointment.
It wasn't like Keefe wanted to be a failure, but this was his mother.
Nothing was good enough for her.
Keefe had made a deal with the Shade, but he didn't realize how much trouble they would cause.
He'd just wanted to get Sophie out safely.
Not because he liked her, because he didn't; but because he wanted the Black Swan to at least have a fighting chance.
He hadn't meant to give them a winning chance.
Lady Gisela had planned the whole fight out carefully. Keefe would give the Black Swan information about a Neverseen recruiting. The Black Swan would trust him. They would walk into the trap with their heads held high, thinking that they had the upper hand. And then they would be ambushed.
Pretty simple, right?
But nope, Keefe just HAD to strike a deal with two powerful Waywards, and completely piss his mom off .
It just went to show how much Keefe thought ahead.
Lady Gisela had been livid, of course, and had completely chewed him out via Imparter, but Keefe was grateful that at least it wasn't face to face. He wasn't sure how much shouting he could take before he finally snapped. But once he looked over at Sophie, who was sleeping peacefully in the bed in front of him, he managed to keep his cool.
He knew he'd done the right thing, even though it had given him a broken arm and cost him the little love his mother had left for him.
And even though he hated it, Keefe knew that if he had to do it all over again, he would've done the same thing.
Good lord, what was happening to him?
~~~~~~~
I don't have an excuse as to why I didn't update for almost a week.
i was lazy, okay?
im also proud of this chapter, even if it is kinda short.
ALSO
i was rereading my copy of Nightfall and i found this:
Fintan's eyes shifted to Marella. "And I get to meet the new recruit --a Redek, no less. I'm assuming your mother doesn't know about this new hobby, give how much she sacrificed to keep you away."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Marella snapped.
Fintan smiled. "Nothing you should concern yourself with anymore."
Okay wait WHAT? I get that Fintan was trying to distract her with an emotional topic, but this is weirdly specific. And it makes me wonder:
What if Caprise Redek falling off her balcony was a cover? What if she interfered with the Neverseen's plans, like Cyrah Endal? What if she was originally part of the Black Swan before something happened that caused her to be the way she is today?
theres a chance that this excerpt means nothing, but Shannon loves plot twists. idk what do you guys think?
also, i got a new cover!
