Lady Gisela had a triumphant smile on her face as Sophie and Keefe emerged from their hiding spot after their little debut. Keefe glanced sideways at Sophie, whose face was hidden behind her short blonde hair. Did she regret kissing him?
That was so not what he was supposed to be thinking about at the moment.
"So, Sophie Foster. Welcome to the base. I assume Keefe was a good guide?"
Sophie glanced at him, bewildered. "..what?"
Gisela's smile grew even wider. "Oh, so my son managed to do something right! This is a first."
Sophie's eyes flickered to Keefe once again, like 'what the heck is she going on about?'
Keefe had a sick feeling in his stomach.
The other two members, whom his mother had been searching for them with, grabbed Sophie's arms and pinned them behind her. Her eyes narrowed when she noticed that they didn't do the the same to Keefe. A raw emotion was bubbling from her as she tried to place what was happening.
Gisela took a slow circle around her, eyeing Sophie like she was an interesting specimen that she couldn't wait to decipher. "For such a strange girl, the Black Swan forgot to give you smarts."
Sophie gritted her teeth in frustration. "What's going on?"
"Tell me, Sophie, did you really think my son, the boy with a promising legacy, would stoop as low as to join your pathetic organization?"
"WHAT?"
He could've sworn that her eyes glowed red with rage. Keefe had to take a step back, as the emotion that was coming off her was almost too much for him to handle. There was pure anger, but underneath that he felt something different.
Hurt.
Betrayal.
As soon as her anger had come, it was gone, and her face turned unreadable, hard as stone.
Gisela grinned once more. "You know, you would make a good bargaining chip. Perhaps we could even study her."
Keefe finally spoke out, unable to take it any longer. "You said you wouldn't hurt her!"
Gisela studied her son. "Yes, I suppose I did. Well, it's not exactly hurting her to lock her up for a few centuries. It's not hurting her to break into that pretty little mind of hers."
Keefe was speechless, for once. He couldn't believe his mother. She always wriggled her way around promises.
Why hadn't he expected it?
Guess I should add that the list of ways I'm useless.
His gaze drifted to Sophie, who was staring at him, hundreds of emotions present in her eyes, which were narrowed into slits. She was staring at him with such intensity, as if daring him to do something.
But Keefe couldn't cross his mother.
Which was why he watched with sorrowful eyes as the Neverseen members took her away.
