"You're very odd, did you know that?"

Sophie opened her eyes, and, squinting because of the bright daylight, had the strangest sense of what humans would call déjà vu.

She knew that this was the same cell she had been held prisoner in back when Keefe had shown his true colors. And once again, the owner of the voice was nowhere in sight.

Sophie didn't even bother trying to locate his position. Her head was pounding, and the lump on her forehead suggested that someone had knocked her unconscious before arriving here.

The events of the previous days rushed back into her mind.

She had been captured.

Again.

And this time she didn't have a handy crystal hidden in her boot.

She scanned her surroundings, but everything was the same. She could have even sworn that the spider in the corner hadn't moved since her last time there.

"Um hellooo?"

Sophie's head snapped up, annoyed. "What?"

The thump that followed likely meant that the invisible person had jumped back in surprise at her tone. "Well excuse me for wanting to make some friendly conversation."

That was the last thing she wanted to do at this point, have small talk with her prison guard.

He huffed. "Fine, be boring. I have to thank you, by the way."

And why is that?

He continued speaking. "If it weren't for you, Gisela would still be mad at me for not watching you last time. But now you're back so all is good!" Sophie knew that if he were visible, there would be a grin on his face.

"What, you have nothing  to say?" He said after a few moments of silence.

"It's hard to have a conversation with someone I can't see."

"It's to protect my identity!" He exclaimed,"What if you show up at my house with a melder? I'm not that stupid!"

His identity...

Sophie couldn't believe how stupid she was.

"You're Alvar," she whispered, remembering what Biana had told her that day. "Fitz and Biana's older brother."

There was a long silence, long enough that Sophie wondered if she had been wrong.

But at last he appeared. All the teasing demeanor was gone, replaced with a serious expression on his face. "You know my family?"

"Who doesn't?"

Alvar said nothing, however his eyes had hardened and he studied her, and Sophie noticed how different he looked when he was angry. Without a smile, he looked almost...frightening.

"What, you have nothing to say?" Sophie asked after another long silence.

"I'd rather not have a conversation with someone who knows so much about me."

Sophie shrugged. "Suit yourself."

Alvar stood up, moving towards the door at the front of the room, behind the bars of the cell. "My shift is over, anyways. Hope we don't meet anytime soon!"

He sauntered to the door, a bit more bounce in his step as though he was happy to get away from Sophie, which he likely was. He raised his hand in a mock salute before slamming the door behind him.

Sophie hadn't even gotten a chance to ask who her next guard would be, but that didn't exactly matter as he emerged through the same door less than a minute later.

And (surprise surprise), it was someone she was very familiar with.
