"Unbelievable. I give you one job, and you somehow manage to screw up."
Keefe cringed. It wasn't his fault that he hadn't been informed about Tam tagging along on the mission. But Lady Gisela refused to hear him out.
"Thanks to you, bother Ruy and Kon are injured. The Shade was even more powerful than Umber. How could you not warn us about this?"
Keefe slowly blew out a breath. There was no right answer here. Everything he said would be used against him, so it was better to just stay quiet until his mother's rage storm passed.
"And all the clues you must have missed. You should have known that wherever the Hydrokinetic went, her twin went as well."
Well, Keefe had barely spoken to or seen the twins after striking the deal with them. He didn't know them at all.
"I don't know, Keefe. I gave you a purpose. It's up to you whether or not you decide to prove yourself." And with that heartwarming little speech, Gisela hung up.
Keefe sighed, flopped on his bed, and flung his Imparter to the other of the room.
He had requested the Black Swan to change his current home situation, and they agreed to allow him to rent out an apartment in Atlantis.
This made it much easier to avoid The One Girl Whose Face He Didn't Want To See Ever Again, but the flat was huge and unwelcoming, and at times, Keefe felt very much alone.
It wasn't unusual for him to feel this way. He'd felt lonely in every place he'd ever lived in, excluding Havenfield. But something was different, and it wasn't whatever his roommate was cooking, which smelled suspiciously like a fart.
No, this time it was something much deeper, although he refused to admit it to himself. Snapping at That Girl had done something to him, and the result was hurting him just as much as it was hurting her.
Maybe more.
