Sophie felt uneasy the second they landed at the Neverseen base, Vinecore. (A/N I suck at making up names. Just go with it) The entire base was in the middle of a forest. The tall trees blocked the sun, and since it was a foggy day, the place looked dark and gloomy. It was unlike anything Sophie had ever seen in the Lost Cities, and she had to remind herself why she had been so excited about this trip.
Sophie started to ask what to do, when Sandor put a finger to his lips. The universal 'shhhh' gesture. He tapped his head, and Sophie finally realized that he wanted her to talk telepathically.
Sophie transmitted a warning to all the others before opening her mind to their thoughts. The dwarves had already burrowed into the ground to get inside the protected base, but when Sophie tried to transmit to them...
She heard nothing.
Pin-drop silence.
She closed her eyes and tried to pinpoint their location, reaching for warmth the way she had been trained.
Still nothing.
Were they blocking her?
"Sophie?" Dex asked.
Sophie looked up, and realized everyone was staring at her.
"You okay?"
Sophie managed a shaky nod before telling them about the dwarves. Sandor frowned. "Maybe the base has some sort of distorting force field?"
She nodded. It sounded like a reasonable theory, but still she tried again.
And that's when she heard it.
Thoughts. So. Many. Thoughts.
They surrounded them.
But they all had one thing in common.
They were wondering how much longer.
How much longer till what? Sophie wondered.
And then she realized.
This wasn't a mission to collect hostages for the Black Swan.
It was an ambush.
