Sophie heard them before she saw them

Sophie heard them before she saw them.

Maybe it was intentional on the Neverseen's part, but their thoughts rang out loud and clear in the air the second Blur instructed her to open her mind.

"They're close." Her voice sounded scary to herself, deep and solemn.

"Alright," Tiergan said quietly. "I can't tell exactly how many there are, but there's too many of them for us to handle at once."

"So we're just gonna run away like cowards?" Sophie asked, feeling slightly irritated.

"We may be cowards, but at least we aren't fools to go into battle unarmed. We've already lost this one."

"Tiergan is right," Blur said before Sophie could open her mouth to object. "We aren't prepared at all, and I'm sure Gisela has brought along some of her most powerful recruits."

They did have a point. But Sophie still had so many questions, the biggest one being how the hell the Neverseen knew that the three of them were in San Francisco?

A loud bang shook her from her thoughts. She looked around wildly, eyes scanning the scene, however nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

But Sophie knew that looks could be deceiving.

And she knew that the Neverseen had a freakishly powerful Shade on their side.

Wasn't there anything her abilities could do to help right now?

She tried something different. Opening her own, she let her consciousness reach for the other minds, trying to pinpoint their location.

Stretching, stretching, stretching until finally—

Bingo.

"They're surrounding us," she whispered, her blood running cold as the sheer horror of the situation finally set in. (thanks nova ❤️)

They had two options: stay and fight, which, in Sophie's opinion was suicide or to attempt to flee the premises, which might result in them getting caught but did have a slim chance where their team didn't meet a gruesome end.

The others seemed to have come to the same conclusion as she did, as they were searching their surroundings for some means of escape.

Sophie did the same, but the streets were so crowded that all she could really see were humans. The weak mental barrier she'd put up beforehand was failing against particularly loud thoughts of some people, making it impossible to distinguish the minds of the Neverseen from them.

She gritted her teeth. Now was not the time to be weak.

She searched for a particularly distinctive mind, one that she would be able to understand without having to push further in order to hear their thoughts.

Her eyes widened as her own mind found one.

She hadn't expected it to actually work.

It was exactly what she'd been looking for, their mind was running through all the plans of the Neverseen, every detail was memorized so vividly that Sophie realized they must have a photographic memory, just like she did.

This is way too easy, her subconscious thought. The Neverseen was filled with highly trained agents, and they would be fools if none of them had taken a training class on how to shield their minds from Telepaths.

Not that it would have worked on her, but the mind of this person was practically laying everything out neatly on a table for her.

This could be a trick.

She dug through the memories, trying to figure out who this mind belonged to. Her consciousness stumbled on a memory, personal by the looks of it, and Sophie nearly surged forward in an attempt to see it.

It showed two people, looking as though they had just eaten and were lying on the floor, talking and laughing.

Sophie let out an audible gasp as she realized she was staring at her own self. The same memory stirred from her collection.

Which meant that the other person in the memory must be...

No. No this couldn't be happening. He couldn't be.
Not here. Not now when she needed to be focused.

She was reading the mind of Keefe Sencen
