The camera was gone.
Anything could be happening right now.
Almost like a chain reaction, the other cameras copied the first, the screen changing abruptly to black.
Dex immediately jumped up, ducking under the table where the wires were with Linh right by his side with his toolbox, everyone else just frozen in shock.
This always happened.
Every single time Sophie thought they were getting ahead, the Neverseen always switched it around, turning the odds in their favor.
And this would just be another game they won.
Red clouded her vision, and she had to take several deep breaths before it cleared.
The Neverseen weren't aware of their plans; Sophie was sure of it. They just used what they saw.
Which meant that making a split decision right now wouldn't do the Neverseen any favors.
She felt a pair of eyes on her, and she met two ice-blue orbs gazing at her intently. No doubt he knew what she was thinking. He leaned down, his lips grazing her ear, and Sophie forced herself not to blush.
She succeeded.
Mostly.
"Whatever you're planning, I want in. You're not going anywhere without me." There was no joking in his tone, and Sophie knew that he'd hold her to her word as she nodded.
She glanced around the room, taking in how her friends were grouped into twos and threes, worry coloring their hushed tones.
It would be smarter to take all of them.
But the Neverseen also knew she was a team player.
They probably had prepared for all of them, thinking caps, Everblaze, maybe even a Flasher. Anything to combat their abilities.
But they couldn't stop Sophie, and for once, she was glad the Black Swan had made her different. Maybe she could finally use them to her advantage.
As for Keefe, Empaths were rarely seen as threats. Nobody would suspect him capable of anything huge, except maybe Gisela. But even she could be surprised.
Keefe seemed to understand she'd made up her mind, as he too spared the room another glance before quietly slipping out into the hallway, Sophie right behind him. They both stilled for a minute, but the hushed conversations didn't even falter as the door creaked ever so slightly.
"We need a leaping crystal," Sophie whispered as they made their into the sunlight.
Keefe gave her a look that made her feel stupid as she realized what she was forgetting. "Oh. Teleportation. Duh."
They were positioned at the edge of the cliff now. Sophie took a deep breath, before suddenly realizing this could be her last time seeing Havenfield.
She could die.
Keefe sensed her mood shift. "It's okay to be scared."
Sophie shook her head. She was done letting the Neverseen mess with her head.
She stepped off, her fingers entwined with his as they disappeared with a satisfying crack.
