A new mission was being held, but Mr. Forkle wouldn't let Sophie go. She was apparently "not strong enough," and they couldn't risk "endangering her well-being." Sophie had wanted to argue that she was plenty strong, but she could see putting up a fight wouldn't change anything. The Collective's decision was final: Let Sophie Die Of Boredom At Havenfield.
Surprise, surprise. Keefe was staying back as well. Coincidence? Sophie didn't think so. She was sure the Collective was conspiring against her, trying to drive her insane with all the time she was spending with that idiot.
As of now, Sophie was stuck at Havenfield, failing miserably at hitting the targets that Sandor had set up for her, while Dex, Grady, and the new recruit, Linh, risked their lives.
Why couldn't Sophie be the one almost dying again?
Several failed dagger-throwing attempts later, Sophie finally gave up and slunk back into the massive house. She found Fitz sitting on the couch in the living room, studying some scrolls, the crease between his eyebrows prominent.
"Hey," Sophie said, plopping down on the couch next to him.
"Oh, hey Soph," Fitz said, looking up and greeting her with a brilliant smile.
"I haven't seen you around lately," Sophie said, trying to start up a conversation.
"Yeah," Fitz mumbled. "My dad's been making me go through history books in an attempt to 'educate me about the enemy.'"
Sophie smiled, "Sounds like fun."
"Oh trust me, it is," Fitz said with an over-exaggerated eye roll.
"I'll leave you to it, I guess," Sophie said, standing up again.
Fitz dragged her back down onto the couch. "Nope, you're suffering along with me."
Sophie sighed and picked up a scroll until she felt eyes on her. Fitz's gaze was focused on her, and he was staring at her intently. Sophie was suddenly aware of how close they were sitting.
Too close.
"Y'know Sophie.....I-I really like you,"
Sophie didn't even know how to respond. She liked Fitz.
But he was just a friend.
Nothing more than that. And the feelings she felt weren't for him.
He seemed to take her silence as shyness, and leaned in. Before Sophie even had time to react, he claimed her lips.
Needless to say, there was no nothing between them. No sign that they were perfect for each other.
There was no spark, there were no butterflies in Sophie's stomach, there was no sudden "oh my gods I love him" emotion.
She didn't know if Fitz realized it too.
It just felt so wrong.
Sophie pulled away and gasped for air. Her throat was hoarse, and she was still trying to wrap her mind around him.
She stood and walked away, as she couldn't handle the awkwardness in the air.
And as she left the living room, she heard shuffling down the hall. Someone had seen them.
