Humans were odd.

Sophie had this thought several times as their hastily-put-together group ventured through San Francisco, California.

This was her first trip to the Forbidden Cities, given that she'd spent most of her life at Havenfield, but even without that, she probably never would've been able to get over how different  they were.

Tiergan, who had ditched his Black Swan disguise and was now wearing a human t-shirt and jeans, elbowed Sophie and pointed to a long red bridge running across a relatively small strait of water. "That's a famous human landmark right there. The Golden Gate Bridge."

Sophie had to admit that it was a fine piece of architecture, for a human anyway.

Looking closer, she saw a couple, holding hands and overlooking the water, and held back a longing sigh.

Love wasn't feeling so very overrated when she wished she could have it this often.

Her eyes scanned the crowded sidewalks. California was a busy place, and she kept bumping shoulders with people. This unsettled her, as anyone would have the opportunity to invade her personal space, and she wouldn't realize it until it was too late.

Sophie wrinkled her nose. Humans also had the most disgusting air ever.

Air wasn't something she noticed or wondered about in the Lost Cities, but here in the Forbidden Cities she finally appreciated the air quality back home. It was little things like this that made Sophie realize how much more sophisticated the elvin world was compared to people.

The other member in the group, Blur, stopped abruptly, knocking Sophie out of her daze and nearly tripping her at the same time. He quickly moved everyone behind a building nearby, glancing over his shoulder several times, his expression nothing short of pure terror.

"Don't move."

"Uh, why?" Sophie felt the immediate urge to squirm around.

Somehow, she resisted it.

"They didn't see us yet." Blur was now mumbling to himself, still glancing at the same point across the street.

"Who didn't see us?"asked Sophie, starting to feel scared.

Why Blur looked so worried?

What could make Blur so frightened?

Unless...

It wasn't what.

It was them.

Even before Blur answered Sophie, she knew.

The same people they had been trying to avoid.

"The Neverseen."
