Sophie trailed behind Keefe, feeling much more worried than he seemed to be.
They were at the Neverseen base in the Forbidden Cities, in the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Why the Neverseen had decided for this rather ordinary city in the U.S. to be their base was beyond her, but Sophie had to admit that the town was pretty in its own way. The streets were filled with cars, and there were many restaurants and shops on the sidewalks. A person could live in one block, and have all the necessities to life at hand.
Sophie was snapped out of her thoughts when Keefe stopped abruptly in front of a street lamp. He pointed to the small crystal embedded into the post. To anyone walking by, it would be almost invisible to them, as there were no other distinguishing features about the lamp. Sophie decided not to ask how Keefe had known about it.
Keefe grabbed Sophie's hand and held the crystal up to the sun. The two of them stepped into the light, neither of them knowing what they were heading into.
+++
It was almost too easy.
They had encountered no one as they walked cautiously down the unforgiving halls of the base. Sophie had no idea where they were, but she was glad she could still see the light of the sun. This meant that the two of them could leap away quickly, if it came to the worst. While it was some form of reassurement, the fact that Sophie needed it only made her more worried.
Keefe checked the corner before they turned, and perhaps it was Sophie's imagination, but she thought she heard scuffling on the other side of the corridor. Keefe seemed perfectly fine however, walking with his back straight and chin up.
Sophie tried to feel as confident as he looked, but to no avail.
Suddenly, she heard someone yell "There!" Both of them flinched and made a run for it. Sophie followed closely behind Keefe, as he seemed to know where they were going.
Left, right, left again.
This definitely wasn't how the mission was supposed to go. They were only supposed to observe, not get caught.
Keefe eventually came to a stop and pulled Sophie into a hidden room beneath the stairs along with him. Sophie gasped for air while he didn't even look winded.
Not fair.
Sophie peeked outside to find signs of danger, and oh dear god, were they in trouble. Unfortunatley, the Neverseen were running right toward them, about 200 feet away. Then 150, then 100, then 50. After much debating, between herself, Sophie decided that this was the best time to put some of her skills to use, even if it meant revealing their hiding place, (which was very cozy, may she mention).
Sophie used telekinesis to pick up a very dirty looking vase down the hall and drop it on the floor.
This caught the Neverseen's attention. All of them rushed to the vase to look for them. Not very smart, in Sophie's opinion, shoud've split up, but she felt the need to thank their stupidty, after all that was the reason they were alive.
Speaking of themselves, Sophie realized that Keefe had made no jokes, no remarks, and absoulutely no snarky comments. He hadn't even talked at all since they started this mission! Sophie was just about to ask Keefe what was bothering him, but then he dragged her to the hallway, and they continued running.
Obviously, they didn't make it far, Sophie's luck isn't that good. Waiting in front of them were four of the six Neverseen members they saw before.
"Guess they aren't that stupid," mumbled Sophie.
Just as they turned around, two more members of the Neverseen came in behind them. Just our luck, thought Sophie, of course nothing in my life can be easy, absoulutely nothing!
Suddenly, Keefe pulled her into a room and locked the door behind them. Sophie was just about to thank him, but then she noticed something that made her heart stop for a second.
They were in a room, with no windows, which meant, no light. Their only way out was through the door.
And the Neverseen.
