Keefe's mom officially had the worst timing.
This wasn't even the first kiss she'd interrupted. It was almost like she had an alarm that rang every time Keefe was actually happy.
Which he wouldn't put it past her to have.
He followed Sophie into the house, catching her every time she tripped over her own feet in her rush. Her emotions were all over the place: anxiety, determination, fear. He knew better than to try and convince her not to go. Knowing her, she'd probably just shout at him.
There were already people at the "Security Room" as Fitz had dubbed it, with all of their eyes on the screen.
"They're here," Linh murmured, her face losing all color.
"What are we waiting for, then? Let's go!" Sophie tried to duck out the door, but Keefe kept a firm grip on her arm.
"Not so fast. We don't even know if this is a trick yet."
"Is that a trick?" Sophie's eyes were blazing as she gestured to the computer, where three figures in long black cloaks were clearly visible.
"As much as I hate to admit it, your boy's right, Sophie," Grizel said.
Keefe nodded, trying to stop Sophie from twisting in his arms.
"And that's why we'll be going."
Even Keefe's head snapped up at this, his eyes focusing where Grizel and Sandor were strapping on armor. "No!"
Neither spared him a look, though they did seem to notice how Sophie and the rest of the group were staring at them, shock evident in their faces. "Don't be babies," Grizel rolled her eyes. "We'll be back before you know it!"
Sandor fixed a stern glare at Sophie, as though he could tell exactly what she was planning. "And do not, by any means, go after us, Miss Foster. I assure you that we will be much safer than you would be if you were to go."
He waited until Sophie managed a shaky nod. "Thank you." He cast a look around the room, even acknowledging Keefe's presence for once. "That goes for everyone."
There were muttered words, though even Keefe knew they were less likely to listen to Sandor than Keefe was to listen to his mother.
There were no other words spoken as they stepped into the light, taking the last leaping crystal with them. All eyes immediately went back to the device until Sandor and Grizel's forms appeared on one of the cameras.
