The slight clinking of bottles and the sound of liquid being poured were the noises Sophie arrived to.
The lab.
She recognized a few of the people without hoods and masks once her eyes had adjusted to the dim light, however most of the people were standing in the back, the dark shadowing them from Sophie.
"Ah, you're here." Sophie's head snapped up as a frail-looking woman stood over her. Her skin was unnaturally pale, contrasting against her dark hair and dark blue eyes, however Sophie found her headwear the most interesting. It looked more like an oversized hairband than a crown, as she suspected it was supposed to be, the color the same dark fuchsia to match her dress, and beaded threads hung from the edges, wrapping around the woman's hair and hanging around her pointed ears. "We've heard so much about you, Miss Foster."
"What do you want with me?" Sophie demanded, hating her voice for shaking.
The woman smiled. "Well, Miss Foster, a few of us have been...curious."
That didn't sound good. "About..?"
"Well, we wondered 'how is it that your creators managed to make something so extraordinary, given the fact that they have access to less resources and less people?"
Sophie swallowed hard.
"And how is it that despite years of having such a weapon, they have yet to defeat us?"
Vespera smiled as Sophie felt the blood drain from her face.
The lab.
They were going to experiment on her.
Sophie grasped for any plausible excuse. "You won't find anything."
"Are you sure about that?"
She saw three others stand up, and she noticed that they were wearing headwear similar to the woman in front of her. Her heart pounded even faster as she saw them approach the tables next to her, picking up what looked like gas masks and turning their gaze to the wide array of tools that had been laid out.
Several of which had sharp edges and pointy tips.
"What about your sanity?" Sophie blurted, her mind racing.
A tinkling laugh sounded from the woman, and the others didn't so much as flinch from Sophie's words. "Don't worry about us, darling."
One of the figures in a gas mask picked up what looked like a doctor's syringe, and held it about Sophie as they filled it with a clear liquid.
"Hush now," one of them whispered, grabbing her before she could flinch away from the needle. Sophie tried everything she knew of to defend herself, but even her inflicting had no effect on anyone in the room.
The needle was pressed into the skin right beneath her shoulder, and almost immediately, Sophie thrashed.
It was like they were putting fire in her bloodstream. She gasped for air but her lungs refused to cooperate, and the last thing she heard was the woman shouting for help as her vision clouded once more.
