Keefe knew this was a test.
He knew it the second his mother gave him the overly-friendly smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She wanted something from him.
Or rather, she wanted to see if he would do that something.
What he hadn't expected, however, was for that something to be guarding their "little captured gem", as Gisela liked to call her, which was probably why she had been observing him for the past few hours before his shift, her beady eyes making him feel like the guinea pig his Human Studies class had had as a pet back when Keefe actually bothered going to school.
He was internally conflicted as he made his way down the hall to where the little gem was being kept. On one hand, he could beg for forgiveness and hope she accepted him back. On the other hand, he knew his mother didn't trust him at all. She probably had extra guards outside the cell to make sure Keefe didn't try anything.
This was all a game to Gisela, and the fact that that her only son was one of the pawns didn't seem to bother her at all.
Keefe was right outside the cell door when Alvar emerged, and the second the prisoner couldn't see him, the huge smile on Alvar's face dropped, leaving angry eyes and a tightened mouth, not acknowledging Keefe at all as he walked by swiftly.
Keefe took a deep breath, his brain frantically trying to come up with a plan. There were likely several Obscured guards watching him trying to collect himself, which didn't help his nerves at all.
He lifted his head, his arm pushing the door open before he could change his mind.
The second he stepped foot in the room he could feel the girl's emotions washing over him, and when he met her eyes, he could feel the shock and surprise, followed by pure rage.
Keefe was the first to look away, and he had the impression that if she hadn't been locked up she would have liked to run him through with a blade right about now.
"Promotion?" Her voice was sugary sweet, a pleasant smile plastered to her face.
"Um..what?"
"Last I checked, you were just Mommy's Pet and just followed her at her heels. Either they ran out of people for the job or they lowered the standards just for you."
That hurt more than it should've, she was voicing his exact insecurities.
Or maybe because it was coming from her.
Melting into a puddle of tears right there would've been kinda pathetic on his part, so he cleared his throat. "I'm here to watch you."
"No duh,"
They were both in for a very long hour.
