It wasn't everyday that Sophie got a somewhat decent night of sleep, but she was too agitated to enjoy it.
Any day now the Neverseen would be at the Sanctuary where her family and friends guarded. And while Sophie knew they were very prepared, she also knew that the Neverseen had a knack for outsmarting them and turning to situation around.
All that combined with the fact that she was stuck at home made her want to break something, and tossing her pillows across the room just wasn't cutting it.
She sighed and threw on a pair of mismatched clothes, not bothering a look in the mirror or to run a brush through her hair. It wasn't like she had anyone to dress up for. (oh honey..)
She wasn't sure who was on duty right now and didn't exactly want to find out. Staring at an unmoving screen for hours would just make her more restless.
But it was either that or feeding Verdi...
Sophie groaned and picked up a bucket.
The first golden rays of sunlight were shoving their way through the clouds, however they were so dim that the world around her was still varying shades of grey. She was deciding which food she would be pelted in that morning when she noticed a figure in the darkness.
Waiting for her.
She screamed and scrambled back before realizing this person had messy blonde hair and ice blue eyes and was laughing at her reaction.
She suddenly became very aware of the face that her tunic was wrinkled and her hair was sticking out in a thousand different directions at once.
"I didn't realize you'd be so excited to see me that you'd hop right out of bed," Keefe said, managing to keep his voice even although this lips twitched and his eyes were still laughing.
"Don't flatter yourself," Sophie snapped, although she could feel her face heating up as she hid behind her tangled locks. "I'm here for the dinosaur."
"The dinosaur really beat me?"
"Even on your best days."
Keefe laughed again, and Sophie had to smile too. It was funny how just seeing him happy made her heart thump faster and lips curl traitorously.
He must have felt her mood shift, and his smile only grew. "What's on your mind?"
"Oh y'know, adults being adults and probably thinking up ways to keep us safe, their last resort being locking us up in a cage. Same old, same old."
"Yeah, Biana said the same thing." His irises were focused on her, but his eyes were far away, as though he was thinking of something else. Sophie suddenly realized how close they were. Her hair brushed his cheek when she turned her face back to him, their noses almost touching.
She swallowed hard, trying to remember how to speak. "I-uh..you don't seem to upset about it..?"
"Honestly sounds like something I would do to keep the people I love safe."
Sophie's breath hitched. "R-really?"
There was no joking in his gaze, only sheer determination. "People like you."
Before Sophie had time to formulate a response while her brain slowly turned to mush, he claimed her lips with his own.
This was nothing, nothing compared to her first kiss. It was like someone had finally opened up all the windows in a dark room, finally allowing Sophie to see the light. Nothing else mattered; the world could've been ending, the Neverseen could've been attacking, Verdi could've gotten out of her cage and Sophie wouldn't have cared.
Keefe pulled away much too quickly, his eyes searching her face. "I-is this okay?"
Sophie pressed her lips back to his in response.
She was flying, everything in her world was vivid in color, in taste, in smell, and yet nothing else mattered more than the boy before her, the one who possessed her heart, who had since the moment she'd met him. Fireworks were igniting inside her, and there was no doubt he could feel it as his lips curled into a smile against hers, but she didn't feel embarrassed, only giddy, longing for more.
They finally broke apart, gasping for air. Sophie's breath was ragged as her eyes held his gaze. She could have stayed like this forever, staring into his beautiful, beautiful eyes.
But it wasn't meant to be.
A high pitched beeping had them both jumping up and scrambling away from each other, searching for the cause of the noise.
Their panic switches.
It was finally time.
