Mean Nothing

Annie's POV:
Being in a car again felt weird, to say the least. I clutched my phone tight as we went over speed bumps and sighed a sigh of relief when we parked outside our house.

As soon as I walked inside I could smell Eric's famous brownies. "Eric dropped some brownies off this morning on his way to the restaurant." Mum says as she carries my bag into my room.

As soon as I walk into my room I grab my camera and hug it to my chest. My camera is my most treasured possession. All my imagination and creativity is on this camera.

When I come back into the kitchen, Mum is putting the brownies in the fridge.

"Getting settled back in?" Mum asks sweetly.

"Yeah." I say as I sit down at the table.

We sit and chat about nothing in particular, though Mum looks happy just to be talking to me.

After a while Mum tells me she has to go to the restaurant for a couple hours. I've heard that before, she won't be home till dinner.

I watch a few movies, not really paying attention to the plot. I decide to call Ty, as school would have just finished.

"Hey!" Ty says, he sounds exactly the same as he sounds in person.

"Hi. Just calling to see how your day was. How was your day?" I ask.

"Why don't I tell you in person? I'm walking home today, I'll drop by on my way home." Ty says, making me smile.

I could use some company, I was being bored out of my mind, being stuck at home. It felt like I was practically grounded.

"Sounds good!" I say.

Before we hung up Ty said he'd be there in ten minutes. I quickly clean up, so the place doesn't look like a dump.

Then I look at myself, my shirt has an odd coloured stain, my tracksuit pants  have a few holes, and my socks are almost too small.

I grab my crutches and quickly go to my room. I grab some clothes, sit down on my bed and start the struggle of getting dressed with a broken leg.

A few minutes later I'm on the couch wearing a t-shirt for a band I don't know, some clean socks and black shorts. I'm browsing through Netflix, looking at movies, though nothing really seems that interesting so I text Kyle.

Annie
Hi!

Kyle
Hey!

Annie
How r u feeling?

Kyle
It's getting easier to breathe. U?

Annie
I'm okay. It felt weird being in a car again.

Kyle
Same! I felt like it was going to crash  at any second. Cars go too fast!

Annie
Yeah!

Kyle
Honestly, I was scared

Annie
Me too

I turn my phone off as I hear a knock at the door.

"Coming!" I yell as I grab my crutches and quickly unlock the door.

Ty is standing outside, perfect as ever, sandy blonde hair a bit messy, hazel/blue eyes on me. In some lights his eyes are blue, but in others they are hazel. It's a bit weird. I'm trying to find out if they have a connection to his mood.

"Hey." Ty says as I open the door wider for him to come in.

"Hi, come in." I say as he walks inside.

As I grip the door handle, my mind goes back to the night of the fight. I was opening the door, wanting Ty to leave.

He slammed the door shut before I could open it fully. I remember every word he said, and every word I said. And I remember the look on his face when I told him the kiss meant nothing.

"Annie?" Ty asks.

"Yeah. All good." I say putting on a fake smile. Ty awkwardly looks around, obviously he remembers that night as well as I do.

"Did it really mean nothing?" Ty asks, almost a whisper.

"Pardon?" I ask, completely confused.

"Did the kiss really mean nothing?" Ty asks again, louder this time. I stand there in silence, not knowing what to say.

I hear my mum's car driving into the car port. "Mum's here." I say quietly.

"Okay." Ty says as he walks towards the door.

"Ty?" I ask. He pauses slightly then walks out the door, closing it behind him.

I feel a tear roll down my cheek. I quickly wipe it away as Mum opens the side door.

"Was that Ty?" She asks as she walks inside.

"Yeah. He just dropped by on his way home to check in on me." I say.

"What a sweet boy he is!" Mum exclaims as she opens the fridge.

"What are you doing home this early?" I ask, trying to change the subject.

"Eric sent me home. That man is a complete mother hen!" Mum laughs as she starts cutting up vegetables.

"I'm feeling a little tired. Can I go lay down in my room?" I lie.

"Sure sweet girl. I'll tell you when dinners ready." Mum says as I grab my crutches.

* * *

When I'm in my room I sit down on my bed, remembering kissing Ty, clear as day. The more time passes  the more I remember that day.

Then I hear the words I yelled when I fought with Ty, the fear I felt when the car crashed and the secret feelings whispered as I was supposed to be asleep.

People who care about other people get hurt the most.

I silently cry into my hands, as time stops and let's me cry myself to sleep.
