"What about Winwin?" I asked Lucas.
He hesitated, fearing that the men would strike him again when not directly translating Lei's words, as they did when we first encountered them.
"I don't know, Zeda. I'm sorry."
The doctor slash chef examined my foot and I instinctively yelped and yanked it back away from his grasp. He shook his head and then left the room.
*C* "Where is he going?" Lucas asked Lei.
*C* "Did I say you could ask me questions?" He shook his head and sneered.
*C* "Tell her to eat." Lei said to him.
"Miss Zeda, he says he wants you to eat your food."
I stared at it, not even the slightest bit hungry. Feeling guilty that I was receiving it and not the others.
"Tell him I won't eat if he won't feed you and Winwin."
Lucas relayed my message, and Lei responded by grabbing the bowl, getting to his feet and sauntering over to the sink, where he poured it down the drain with a grin on his face.
He said something and Lucas passed on the message back to me, stammering for a moment.
"I am trying to think of the English phrase ... what is it ... I believe maybe it is, suit yourself?"
"That sounds right." I sighed.
*C* "Stupid girl." One of the other men muttered with a shake of their head.
Lei sat down beside me again and the doctor came back in, holding what looked like a boot. A walking boot.
He fixed it onto my foot and then held my arm to stand me up. My foot still ached but ... I could walk. He let me go and I stood upright and couldn't help but smile a little when I didn't fall over.
"Why is he helping me?" I asked. "Why would they give me this?"
"He must like you. I mean ... I don't blame him."
*C* "You are only to speak when she and I are talking, swine." Lei hissed at Lucas.
*C* "Am I not allowed to answer her questions if I know the answer? You really want me to bother you with every peep from her?"
*C* "What did she ask?"
*C* "Why you are doing this. When your men are known to slaughter innocent people on the daily." Lucas furrowed his brows.
*C* "I guess I would have not been able to answer it anyway. I have never done this for a person."
Still feeling lightheaded I returned to my seat while they were talking, and suddenly Lucas was looking at me with great worry. My eyes darted around frantically, and I discovered Lei was now standing behind me.
He sighed and tucked a section of my hair behind my ear. I cringed and pulled away from him.
He leaned down so his lips were practically on my ear when he said, *C* "Since she will not eat you can both go back down to the hole."
