"Can I ask an odd question?" Lucas asked as I slumped back onto the couch.

I nodded.

"I suppose you asked the same type of question earlier...." He paused.

"Sometimes I think about that tape of Johnny making a move on you...."

"Do you ever think you could have ended up with him instead?"

"You ever think about how things would be if you had picked me?" I heard Johnny's voice in my mind.

That same question he had asked at the bar the day before.

I mentioned it to him, and he laughed.

"What did you tell him?"

"I said I love you, Lucas. Obviously, Johnny is great, but I feel something with you. Something different."

I put my palm on his chest and he smiled, glancing down at it.

"Are you sure it isn't because I'm in his clothes?" He teased me, tugging at the collar of his blazer.

"And you're wearing his cologne." I added, and his eyebrows raised.

"Are you sure I'm the one you're choosing?" He again joked.

"Yes." I told him and planted a kiss onto his lips.

My eyes went back to my hand, and I remembered what was beneath it.

The ring on my finger I once tried to pass to him, still in its box, while he laid on the concrete bleeding out.

"You just ... keep it." I heard his voice in my mind, weak and hoarse.

"Is it .... All better now? Did they fix you up?" I asked him.

He knew what I was referencing and nodded, setting his glass down and slowly undoing the top few buttons on his white undershirt.

"I can't exercise as much as I used to for a certain amount of time. But everything's okay. It missed everything important."

He pulled the shirt aside and slightly revealed the scar that was still fairly fresh.

I gasped and my eyes teared up.

I looked him in the eyes and we both communicated without words. Both reliving our trauma of that day.

I could almost still hear the crack of the metal bat striking Vince's pathetic face and probably fracturing his skull.

"No ... what the fuck ... no!" I could hear Chaz scream. And Johnny joined him.

I wondered if Lucas was experiencing the same things as me.

My mind had never been the same since the barn.

I get random flashbacks and nightmares. I can hear people's voices clear as day when no one is around. Things said from the past.

Just like what happened in the barn.

"Lucas, I feel like it's all my fault." I told him.

He shook his head and scooted closer to me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders.

"It is, though. Really."

"Zeda, no-"

I cut him off.
