As we descended down the stairs, we could hear loud music and the boys laughing in the living room. We dropped off the dishes in the kitchen sink and then went to Lucas's room to put the curtain in the laundry bin and Lucas wanted to change his clothes back, insisting the boys would make fun of him if he stayed in it to hang out with them. But I tried to convince him otherwise.
"Please, just a little longer, you look so good." I gently tugged at his shirt, pulling him towards me.
He chuckled and placed his hands on my waist.
"I'm never going to hear the end of it."
"Didn't Johnny already see you?"
"Yes, but going out there to sit with them is a bit different."
"Pleeeease." I pleaded, giving him puppy eyes and sticking out my bottom lip.
He pinched my cheek and placed a kiss onto my nose.
"Fine." He smiled and re-buttoned the top buttons he had undone already.
"Hey uh ... before we go do you wanna ... show me that picture?" I reminded him.
He sighed. "Can I ask .... Why do you care about her so much? She means nothing to me. I haven't so much as even kissed her. She was just the woman labeled by my parents as my girlfriend. I did not even consider her that on my end. But I also don't mean to talk negatively. It's not her fault either. Her parents were also forcing the relationship."
He grabbed his phone from a drawer and turned it on. His eyes lit up.
"I actually do have service right now. This must be a sweet spot; it probably won't last long."
He seemed to start to look her up but stopped and looked at me with his phone still in his hands. I was sitting on the bed while he stood a few feet in front of me.
"Maybe while I have this little bit of service you should ... call your family." He suggested.
I realized I never called anyone that day everyone's phones were working, and it had been about a week since then. I raised my eyebrows but was still hesitant.
"Uhm ... yeah maybe I should ... I guess."
He could sense my hesitation. "Do you want to?"
I shrugged. "Yes and no."
He laughed. "That's okay. You don't have to. Just an idea."
"You're not just trying to distract me so you don't have to show me a picture, are you?"
He shook his head. "No, really. She means nothing. Look, here." He seemed to type in her name and then clicked on her profile picture and turned his phone to face me.
She was beautiful. The picture was of her in a traditional Chinese gown with her long dark hair flowing down to her waist. She was skinny but still had curves and had a stunning face. Absolutely flawless from her cheekbones to her chin. Nothing was out of place and her skin was glowing and was the same beautiful shade of honey as Lucas's. Her bright blue eyes shot into my soul with their beauty and my heart completely sank. She was so much better than I was.
I took the phone from his hands and scrolled down her page. There was a button to translate her bio into English, and it said she was a college graduate, a doctor and a model. She had thousands of friends and thousands of pictures, each one prettier than the last. I saw one with her and Lucas. Very much platonic, they weren't even very near each other and were just holding up peace signs in a restaurant. But it still killed me. How could he possibly have met her and had the chance to be with her, and still choose me?
