"My dad..." murmured a soft voice across the infirmary. Harry's eyes slowly parted as he sat up. "I saw my dad..."
"He's losing it," Malfoy murmured, arms crossed around his chest.
"Uh-huh..." I hummed in agreement.
"He sent the Dementors away..." Harry said, placing his thin glasses back over his eyes. "I saw him. Across the lake..."
When everyone gave him silence, he glanced across the infirmary and dipped his head towards me. "Y/N was there. Ask her— she saw him."
"No I didn't." I said quickly.
Hermione turned back to Harry and sighed. "Listen, Harry. They've captured
Sirius. Any minute the Dementors are going to perform the Kiss.""The Kiss...?" Harry shook his head in confusion.
"It's what Dementors do to those they want to destroy. They clamp their jaws over the victim's mouth and... suck out their soul." Hermione explained.
"You mean, they're going to kill Sirius?" Harry sounded horrified.
"No. It's worse. Much worse." My voice rose above the air. Everyone turned their heads to look at me. "You go on living, but you have no memory. No sense of self. You're just a shell. An empty shell..."
Before Harry's horror could show, the infirmary's door swung open and Dumbledore strolled in.
"Headmaster!" Hermione exclaimed. "You've got to stop them! They've got the wrong man!"
"It's true, sir!" Harry slipped down from the side of his bed. "Sirius is innocent."
"It's Scabbers who did it!" Ron added. Dumbledore silently looked over at Ron, who was propped up onto his elbows, his leg a heavily bandaged.
"Scabbers...?" Dumbledore questioned.
"My rat, sir!" Ron explained. "Only he's not really. Well, he was a rat. You see, he
used to be my brother Percy's—,""The point is," Hermione interjected. "We know the truth. Please, sir, you must believe us."
"I do, Miss Granger." Dumbledore assured her. "But I'm sorry to say the word of a couple of thirteen-year-old wizards will convince few others. A child's voice, however honest and true, is meaningless to those who have forgotten how to listen."
As Dumbledore turned to the window, a shooting star plummeted silently through the dark sky. On cue, the midnight bell began to chime.
"Mysterious thing, time." Dumbledore hummed. "Powerful. And, when meddled with...
dangerous." He said, his pale eyes gazing over each of our faces. "Sirius Black is in the
topmost cell of the Dark Tower."I looked over at Malfoy, brows furrowed. He had a similar expression on his face.
"You know the laws, Miss Granger." Dumbledore said to Hermione. "You must not be seen. And you would, I feel, do well to return before this last chime. If not... well, the consequences are really too ghastly to discuss. Three turns should do it, I think. If you succeed, more than one innocent life may be spared tonight."
