After a refreshing morning free of any classes, my break soon came to an end. I was fortunate enough to have a free period first thing since I decided against taking Anicent Runes, however that left me dreading the lesson that followed.

Defence Against the Dark Arts.

I reluctantly left the dimly lit common room for the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom that was also located in the dungeons- not too far from the Slytherin common room.

Draco was equally uninterested, and just lazily dragged his feet from behind me. I suppose he was pretty content with the early morning that we both had- and was probably disappointed our time cosied up together eventually had to come to a halt.

By the time we reached the classroom, Ron and Harry were making their way from the opposite direction, and Hermione had already queued up outside, carrying an armful of heavy books.

When I came to approach the bushy haired Gryffindor girl, she let out a long exasperated sigh. 'We got so much homework for Runes!' She exclaims anxiously, Harry and Ron coming up to join her. 'A fifteen-inch essay, two translations, and I've got to read these by Wednesday!'

'Shame.' Ron yawned, earning a sharp glare from Hermione.

'Just you wait.' Hermione said resentfully, 'I bet Snape gives us loads.'

The classroom door flung open just on queue, and Snape stepped into the corridor. Just as usual his sallow face was framed by two curtains of greasy black hair, and his presence was enough to make silence immediately fall over the queue.

'Inside.' Snape orders sharply.

And just like that everyone raced to enter upon his word. I look around the classroom, and couldn't help but notice how Snape somehow managed to make it gloomier than usual. Every curtain had been drawn over the windows, and the only source of light came from very few candles.

I had to squint my eyes just to make out the shape of a few things amidst the dark, and wondered how I was ever meant to read in a room like this. The fine letters of the page were bound to just blend in with the insufferable gloom.

However what made me even more uncomfortable was the new pictures Snape had mounted up onto the walls. Most of which showed people to be in pain, sporting grisly injuries, or strangely contorted body parts; some even showing the fatal injuries of severed arms or magically destructed limbs.

Nobody said a single word as we all got situated into our seats, and everyone looked around at the shadowy, gruesome pictures just as I had. Snape's personality certainly was... something.

Draco sat down besides me and without a word to each other, he picked up his bag and reached inside, pulling out both of our books.

'I have not asked you to take out your books.' Snape drawls, closing the classroom door behind him. He moved across the room to face the class, carefully scanning every students glum faces on the way past.

Draco hastily dropped both copies of our textbooks into his bag, and quickly dropped it back down onto the floor and kicked it under our seats.

'I wish to speak to you, and I want your fullest attention.' Snape demands, his black eyes roving over everyone's upturned faces. He silently inspected each and every individual, even if it was for just a second- ensuring he had our full attention.
