On the way out of the Whomping Willow, Sirius Black took it upon himself to explain everything to Malfoy and myself. "And on that note..." he turned to Ron, "I'm sorry about that bite. I reckon that twinges a bit."

Ron, who was limping on the other side of him, scoffed. "A bit? A bit?! You almost gnawed my leg off!"

"I was going for the rat," Sirius said, as though it changed anything. "Normally, I have a very sweet disposition as a dog. In fact, more than once, James suggested that I make the change permanent."

I climbed out of the tunnel after Malfoy; and was immediately relieved to feel the cool, night air blow back into my face. "Aren't you just glad you came to watch that bloody birds execution—,"

I glared at him mid-sentence. "It's not too late for me to hate you again, Malfoy."

"Even after this?" He frowned.

"Especially after this." I said, dropping down next to him in a dry patch of grass. Malfoy scooted closer, that way our hips touched. His pale eyes silently observed my face as I tangled my fingers in the grass below; ripping strands of it out.

"Ron! Haven't I been a good friend? A good pet?" Pettigrew emerged from the tunnel, "You won't let them kill me, will you? I was your rat!"

Ron drew back in disgust.

Malfoy turned and I turned to watch as Pettigrew confronted Hermione. "Sweet girl. Clever girl. Surely you won't let them..."

Lupin grabbed Pettigrew by his robes and dragged him away.

"Think you might need a new rat, Ron." I called over. Ron looked up from his bleeding limb and chuckled in slight disbelief.

"You think?!"

"Are you not questioning in the slightest as to why we're still here," Malfoy muttered quietly to me. "Especially with this lot."

I met Malfoy's softened profile and grinned. "I would, but this is far too interesting to miss out on."

"Of course it is," Malfoy shook his head, smiling.

Just over the mountain tops in the distance, the full moon started to rise. "Mm... this is nice." I hummed.

Well, it was nice. Short-lived, but nice.

"Harry!" Hermione's voice quavered with fear; her eyes set on the full moon. Harry turned around and seemed to understand her concern in a heartbeat. Just beyond, Professor Lupin became a rigid silhouette against the sky.

"I'm sorry— are we missing something here?" I murmured to Malfoy. Everyone else had risen to their feet, faces melted in concern. "I have no idea..." He whispered, placing a hand under my armpit to pull me up from the ground.

Lupin's fingers twitched inhumanely; and his eyes dilated to dramatic measures in the moonlight. "Remus, old friend..." Sirius stumbled towards him. "Did you take
your potion tonight?"

Lupin shook his head, continuing to twitch.

"Run. All of you." Sirius looked over his shoulder at the rest of us. "Now."
