Chapter 16

Chaos smiled all the way back to the broken cathedral. He could hardly help it and he thought he would remember Dawne’s expression for the rest of his life.

He stared down at her, a delicate hand was hovering over her lips and her cheeks burned as red as her hair. The incredibly light green eyes stared up at him, wide as saucers.

It wasn’t until he let his smile escape that her expression changed. She blinked frantically and anger filled her expression. She opened her mouth and yelled but he was too far away by now to hear.

Chaos chuckled again at the thought, he had never realized how fun it was to play with mortals. Growing up he was all seriousness, all work and no play. Now with Dawne he was able to spar with his words like he so longed to do.

And what was even better was that she wasn’t the least bit intimidated by him, so she didn’t hold back. Right then and there Chaos had decided to come and see her on a regular basis. She was far too interesting not to.

His dull gray, colorless life was suddenly plunged into fiery red. In his world it was all forced pleasantries and curt bows but no longer. Now his world was full of playful banter and a woman with a mean left hook.

It was a wonder to him that so many emotions could pass behind her eyes at one subject. Sorrow, pain, gladness, acceptance, fear. He couldn’t even fathom feeling so much at one time.

Once he soared through the open tower window at the top of the cathedral he was stopped by his least favorite creature ever...

“Dious” Chaos rolled his eyes in disgust.

There before him sprawled out on the carpet was Dious...Lucifer’s favorite hellhound. Chaos never got along with these terrible despicable creatures. He hated them and they hated him right back.

It rose on its thick black haunches and turned its yellow sockets upon Chaos’s figure. The black flames swirled and grew even higher like hair raising on end. A menacing unearthly growl flowed from between its barred teeth.

“What is it you want?” Chaos addressed it straight on. These dogs were once a pair of demons but once lucifer stripped them of their power they reverted to an animalistic state.

“There you are my precious Dious.” Lucifers voice drawled from the hallway. The hellhound perked up and bounded over to his side. “Ah my son, just the man I wanted to see....”

Chaos swallowed and held his ground. “The wind tells me that you are spending more and more time in the mortal world, dillydallying are we?”

“The wind always lies.” Chaos shrugged off the comment feeling sick.

“I sure hope, for your sake...that it is lying. You have no business with those filthy creatures down there.” An overt sense of malice was detectable in his calm slow voice.

“Of course father.”
