Chapter 30

“Hey there stranger.” A musical voice sounded forcing Dawne to reluctantly turn her head.

“Why hello William.” She replied curtly and continued walking.

He was in step with her instantly “Please...call me Will.”

“Alright then. Hello Will.” She revised smartly earning a small laugh from him.

“What are we doing today then?” Blinking in confusion Dawne glanced up at him.

“I was unaware that we had made any sort of plans...” He turned smiling hazel eyes down at her. Annoyed she quickly turned down an alley in an attempt to loose him.

She heard musical laughter from behind as she made her escape. A quick look over her shoulder assured that she did in fact loose him. Just for extra measure she spotted a one story house and made her way up to the roof.

The shingles were wet with the rain from this afternoon making it slick. Just as she noted the slippery surface her hand glided off the gutter. She tried to grasp the gutter with her other hand but it slipped as well. Her stomach rose to her throat as she felt her feet loose contact with the outside protruding window frame.

She shut her eyes tight but someone had grabbed hold of her wrist and was hoisting her up. Snapping them open she saw the familiar golden locks of William. He pulled her up then crushed her against his slender chest.

“Thank you...” She breathed into his shirt.

“Good thing I was here huh? That makes it Will two Dawne zero.” Dawne pulled away but still remained in arm length to observe his face quizzically.

“What?” She blinked trying to grasp everything that just happened.

“I’ve saved your life twice now.” He flashed a row of perfect teeth at her.

Dawne shook her head and walked away from him. “I can’t remember a time when I was ever this careless. Not even when I was a foolish young girl.”

Softly Will approached “You are still young...or at least you appear to be. Unless...you are some witch that has enchanted me!” He teased gently and rubbed his eyes playfully as if trying to banish a mirage.

“How old are you anyway?” He moved in closer.

“Old enough to know better.” Dawne replied sadly turning from him.

“What hangs over your pretty little head, huh? What ails such an innocent heart?” He moved over to her side and plopped down unexpectedly to dangle his legs over the side of the roof.

“There are many things over my head, on my shoulders, in my mind...” She sighed and joined him on the ground.

“You can tell me about it. It might feel good to get it off your chest.” He squinted his warm eyes at her and tilted his head to one side.

But Dawne didn’t feel like talking about it. She never felt like talking to anyone...anyone except for Chaos. Suddenly the thought of him made a pang of pain hit her square in the chest.

She missed his presence for some reason and this felt like deja vu in a sense. It felt wrong to be sitting here with anyone but Chaos. And yet she felt at ease with William.

“No I do not have anything to say on the matter.” Dawne summed up feeling extremely down trodden all of a sudden.

“That’s alright.” William grasped her hand suddenly and gave it a little squeeze. “You don’t have to talk.”

They sat like that, Dawne’s hand resting loosely in Will’s. Complete silence remained between them as they remained unmoved and stared at the sky.

As day turned to night before their very eyes Dawne wished that Chaos would return soon. She longed for just a glimpse of him or just to hear his soothing voice.
