Chapter 42

Dawne woke to the echo of falling rocks. As her eyelids flickered open a blinding pain flashed in the back of her head.

“Where am I...” She grumbled and slowly worked her way into a sitting position.

Then the image of Lucifer swam before her eyes, his cruel eyes alight with amusement as he strangled her. She pushed the thoughts aside. There was other things she needed to focus on now, like her surroundings.

There was a small orb of blue light right above her, floating inches away from the ceiling.  But the unearthly ball did not shed enough light on her surroundings. So she stood up, gingerly noting the pain in her legs and arms.

From what she could see, she was in some sort of underground cavern. The floor and air was slightly moist and she could hear the hum of insects.

“They must have gotten in from somewhere.” Dawne thought to herself.

So she spun about and randomly decided to turn left. She walked forwards until a change in lighting caused her to freeze. The once blue eerie light was now red and as she stepped into the surrounding darkness it grew brighter.

As she took more steps the light suddenly shut off completely and she was lost in darkness. Suddenly the red light returned, this time in a concentrated beam that directed itself straight into her chest.

Dawne looked down at the red beam curiously, where it touched her skin it began to burn. She side stepped but it followed and grew hotter. She was able to wave a hand through it and felt nothing. Quickly she turned and ran but the heat did not leave her, it grew hotter and hotter.

She called out in pain as her skin felt like molten lava. The farther she ran from the orb the hotter it got. Her muscles seized up and sweat poured down her body, soaking her thoroughly.

Her knees gave out next and she hit the rock floor roughly. She struggled to undo her heavy clothing but her vision swam.
