Chapter 20
Dawne and Chaos had spent a good portion of the day together and now night was quickly coming to a close.
Dawne released a large yawn “It’s so late.” She watched as Chaos turned his gray eyes skyward.
“I’ve kept you out all night haven’t I? That’s not very gentlemanly of me.” Dawne couldn’t help but giggle at that.
It was so strange sitting here in his presence, laughing and smiling. She had never felt so comfortable and free before.
“I think it’s time I get some sleep.” She stood up brushing off her breeches.
“Why do you wear mens clothing?” She stood up quickly and found Chaos standing right in front of her.
“Well...they are practical. I can’t be leaping over broken shingles worrying about stray fabric getting caught.” She pulled on her cloak noticing how cold the air was.
“You’ve always dressed this way?” Dawne stepped around him avoiding his wings and started on the dirt path.
“No. Not always.” Chaos was quickly at her side keeping pace flawlessly. She continued.
“There was a time when I wore the finest gowns, hats and rode in carriages.” She smiled sleepily in the dark.
“Tell me about it?” He asked innocently enough.
Dawne had already felt like she told him so much, so to keep this information private was useless. Besides for some reason she wanted him to know about her, she wanted someone to know her past so they could appreciate her present.
“My father was wealthy...a business man you see” She began it quickly as if the story was always floating around in her head waiting for an audience. “Maintaining a stylish lifestyle and being active in society was basically part of the job description. So we were social butterflies, attending parties, balls and dining with best of the best. I even had my own tutor! Which was rare for woman in society. I was almost too educated for my own good” Dawne laughed in remembrance of the many times she was scolded for speaking her mind to wealthy tradesmen.
“You sounded like quite a threat! Beauty and brains.” Chaos smiled down at her and she brushed the comment off with a yawn.
Unconsciously her pace slowed, there was such a long way to go still. She could see the city ahead of them but it was still a considerable distance. Another smothered yawn.
“Do you want me to carry you back?” The question caught her off guard.
“No.” She said immediately her wall going back up.
“It’s quite a ways yet and it’ll be much faster if I fly you back.” He did have a point and she was all about practicality.
A moments more hesitation “...alright.” Chaos smiled wide, far too pleased at her answer.
He put his arm beneath her legs and instantly she was horizontal. She could feel his strong arm muscles rippling beneath her legs and across her back where he held her.
She glanced up at his face that was perfectly illuminated by the moonlight. His rigid jawline had a faint trace of stubble across it and she followed it up to his full lips. Light gray orbs flickered down and locked with her green eyes.
“Ready?” His voice was soft but held a twinge of excitement.
She nodded and shut her eyes tight. There was a sudden jolt as they lifted off the ground and her stomach rose into her throat as the feeling of falling clouded her brain. The free falling stopped as she heard two heavy wing beats, up and down, up and down. Air swirled about them as Chaos flapped in place for a minute.
She felt him exhaling hard as he brought them higher into the sky. For a moment she wondered if she was too heavy but then they began to glide forwards at a leisurely pace.
Feeling daring she peaked through half hooded eyes to see the stars staring down at her and dark clouds looking closer than ever. Turning her attention to Chaos she let her eyes roam all over his face. He was staring straight ahead, lips slightly parted and his glossy black hair was flowing majestically in the wind. In a way he was quite beautiful and it shocked her when she came to this conclusion.
“It’s beautiful isn't it?” The sentence made her cringe in fear. “It’s a whole new perspective, flying above the city than being down in it.”
She smothered a blush as she realized the topic of his sentence. “Yes” She stammered.
Noticing her hands were in a vice like grip on his silken shirt she slowly unfurled her fingers. But she didn’t want to take her hands away completely so instead she rested both palms flat against his broad chest.
His flesh beneath the fabric seemed hot and she could detect a strong heart beat. Curiously she began to count the beats, there was more than fifteen seconds between each beat. It was uncommonly slow, vaguely she wondered if all angels had slower heart beats.
They angled downwards and headed straight for her fathers house. Begrudgingly she left his warm embrace and slept the rest of the night away dreaming of the stars.
