Chapter 26

“..What are your abilities? I know you can read aura’s just like me but there are other things?” She prompted, proud that she thought of something to ask.

“It would take a life time to explain them all...” He trailed off again.

“You don’t seem to be in the mood to answer questions. No wonder I can’t ever learn anything about you!”

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Let me try again.” He smiled at her lifting the heavy mood around them.

“I can control darkness, the worlds shadows, draw them to me, push them away.” Briefly she saw his own shadow that was cast against the wall grow and fill the entire room.

In a snap it retreated “I can feel emotions in the air.” He paused a moment and looked away. “It’s very hard to explain...” Dawne shot him an angry glance at his unwillingness to answer anything. “But I’ll try!” Another brilliant smile.

“Major emotions in the air cause it to be heavy around me. Grief and sadness is heavy almost like humidity on a hot day, makes it hard to get a full breath in. Happiness is light and breezy, lust is sticky, nervous is shifty...and so on and so forth. Does that make any sense?”

Dawne nodded quickly eager for more. “It only really works for strong emotions, something the person is feeling with every fiber of their being. Though I can still read softer felt emotions in the air if I’m close enough physically to them.”

Suddenly Chaos was inches away from her face and for some reason she couldn’t bring herself to turn away. Dark lashes framed his now creamy gray warm eyes and his brow was furrowed slightly. His full lips were pursed in concentration and the masculine smell of him washed over her pleasantly.

“Hmmm...unrest, sadness...no now calm...are you masking your emotions from me?” His lip twitched as if holding back a smile.

He inched closer now only a mere breath away from her face, her lips. “Lets see here...nervous, unrest, scared, embarrassed.” Chaos’s words left his mouth and whispered hotly across her face.

“Oh and back to clam nothingness.” He moved away and his expression was thoughtful. “You mask your emotions well from me. No fair.” He pouted.

Dawne mentally sighed in relief. “Next question...” She began shakily.

“Do you eat?” He blinked and looked at her an eyebrow raised. “Do you eat food? Do you need to eat food to survive I mean?” When he didn’t continue she asked “Is it required-”

He laughed deep in his throat, rumbling through the whole room. He stopped when he caught the murderous glance she was throwing at him.

“I’m sorry. Yes of course I eat, I need food and water to survive just like you.” The smirk was still plastered on his face.

“Is that really such an oddity of a question?! You sitting here with wings and casting shadows about...would it be a stretch if you did not require food?!” Chaos reached out and patted the top of her head twice with his large warm hand.

“No, no. Calm your storm. I forget how little you know about angels.”

Still slightly bristled she asked “So, you also require sleep like a mortal?”

“Angels do need sleep but for not as many hours as mortals. We heal and rejuvenate faster than mortals so around an hour is enough time for us. That being said it’s enjoyable to sleep, so we tend to sleep for as much time as mortals.”

“What else should I know about angels?” Dawne stretched out her feet as her eyelids began to grow heavy.

“Hmmm...our core temperature is twice as warm as humans, so we are rarely cold. No pair of wings are alike, we still feel pain... contrary to popular belief and our bones are in fact hollow.”

Dawne smiled sleepily at the matter of fact tone he was using. “You are tired, you should sleep.”

“I’m not tired!” Dawne fought into an upright sitting position, previously she was currently slouched against the wall.

“You let your guard down when you’re tired, I can read your exhaustion in the air perfectly.” He rose swiftly and a single feather trailed across Dawne’s legs sending shivers through her body.

“I will leave you so you may rest.” He seemed overly curt and stiff as he stood in front of her.

“Good night.” Chaos inclined his head. With a swirl of feathers he was out the window and into the night.
