Chapter 44

Chaos spent the next few days trying to stay as much out of the way as possible. Taharial and Lucifer were eventually going to kill each other. That much he was certain of. Until the final blow up that was inevitable, Chaos remained in his room.

During the long hours he was in a foul mood. He sat staring out his large window pleading with the sun to go down so he could leave.

The first night he collected souls and returned back promptly. The next night he took a slight detour...in hopes of seeing Dawne. But he could not find her.

The third night he began to feel extremely uneasy. He looked everywhere for her but he couldn’t see her of feel her anywhere.

A confrontation was in order but there was no way to get his father alone. And frankly he was too frightened. But there was one person he could ask...

“Balan!” Chaos called out gruffly.

Balan merely turned slowly and appraised Chaos with no emotion.

“I must speak to you.”

Balan nodded curtly and followed Chaos into his room. With a curl of his first two fingers to door swung closed.

“Listen. I know you have allegiances to my father...but I must ask you to be truthful about something.”

“Dicam veritatem.” Balan answered quickly in the ancient language (I will speak the truth.)

Chaos nodded knowing that it was impossible to lie in the ancient language.

Balan’s jaw was tightly locked, there was emotion there but he guarded it well.

Chaos continued solemnly. “I don’t expect you to reveal anything...for I know the consequences are great. But have you heard anything about-”

Before Chaos could finish Balan said

“Forte sic est.” (She is here.)

“How did you?-”

“That is all I can say on the matter.” And with that Balan left the room in a swirl of black feathers.

Chaos’s mind turned to complete panic- then Balan popped his head back in the door.

“Chaos...”

“Yes?”

“Hurry.”

During the next two days Chaos spent every second searching the castle in the most casual way possible. He visited his fathers study, to borrow a book, then to the kitchens, then to ask his servant a question. But to no avail.

There wasn’t a place in the old cathedral he hadn’t searched. On the third day Chaos was mere minutes away from confronting his father directly. He collapsed against the library wall his eyes shut tightly.

“Dawne...where are you?” He whispered, tears stinging his eyes.

“ignoscite princeps.” (excuse me Prince)

“Yes..Rei. What is it?” Rei was one of Lucifers many slaves. It was Chaos’s choice to have him as a personal slave, he seemed more intelligent than the others.

These slaves were once souls that never got properly sent to Yahweh, instead they were with held. Now they were like the living dead, they didn’t eat, breath, sleep or even blink. And they only understood the ancient language of the dead.

But Chaos had been slowly teaching him to speak outside of the true language, and to his surprise he actually had the capability to learn.

“Credo sciebam puto-”

“English, Rei, english.”

His black eyes found Chaos as he struggled to find the words.

“I know...where the...girl is.”
