Chapter 43

Dawne opened her eyes, right above her...the blue orb. She was laying flat on her back on the cold stone ground. After she struggled her way to a sitting position she noticed she was back where she started.

“Damn it.” She cursed.

Dawne spent the next four hours testing her boundaries. From what she could tell she had about an 8 foot circle of safety, where ever the blue light touched is where she could go.

If she stepped beyond it she had ten quick seconds before her body grew inflamed and she would pass out.

She was growing extremely exhausted but she couldn’t stop trying. Suddenly light foot falls began reverberating off the walls.

“Who’s there?!” Dawne tried her best to sound strong as she shakily stood up.

“I’ve brought you some food.” The voice sounded familiar.

“Who are you?” She spat as he stepped into the dim light.

“I am Balan.” He stated simply.

Balan had dark hair and if she wasn’t mistaken there was a slight red tinge to it. His wings were jet black and the feathers looked stiff and almost corse. Blue eyes swept over her in confusion.

“You’re more weak than I expected you to be at this rate.” His deep voice held no emotion.

“I am not weak.” Dawne gritted her teeth.

“I can sense it in the air Dawne.”

“You can feel emotions in the air too huh?”

“Yes, me too.” He walked over to her and studied her face.

She titled her chin up defiantly, ready for some kind of punishment or torture.

“I’m not going to hurt you.” He began slowly then looked around “Why don’t you escape?”

Dawne laughed bitterly. “If I could step beyond this light, I would.”

“What do you mean?”

“The light burns me when I step beyond it.”

Balan nodded slowly “So that’s what you see...”

“What...” Dawne swallowed. She felt oddly comfortable with this man, as if she had met him before.

A deep bellowing bark startled them both.

“I must go. Take this.” Balan handed her a small basket and turned quickly disappearing into the darkness.

“Wait!” Dawne called, suddenly desperate.

But he was gone. She collapsed to the ground and felt tears run down her face.
