Chapter 25
Dawne sat on her lone mattress, in the empty room that was once her fathers house. What was going on with her life? Why had everything been turned upside down?
Today felt so strange, the days events swam inside her head.
“Dawne...” She could still hear his voice calling out to her at that moment.
Chaos had dropped out of no where, emotions flying high and a sinister tone to his voice. Something about William had set him off and frankly it confused her.
She could still feel the soft brush of air on her wrist that made her turn to him. His eyes were full of emotion that she couldn’t figure out.
“Dawne...” Her brain replayed his voice saying her name and she buried her head in her pillow.
“Dawne...” She let out a muffled scream directly in the heart of the soft pillow. “Get out of my head!”
A gentle touch on her shoulder made her remember the way she brushed past Chaos. But...no this wasn’t a memory...the presence was still there.
“Dawne.” Instantly she shot up off the mattress into an erect sitting position. Kneeling by her side on the floor was Chaos, his hair disheveled and his majestic wings trailing behind him.
“How long have you been here?!” She inquired as crimson crawled its way into her cheeks.
“Long enough. What’s the matter?” His palm caressed her shoulder and she quickly stood up out of his reach.
“What’s the matter with me? What’s the matter with you?! That’s the real question that needs to be answered here!” Her hands were on her hips and she watched as he rose slowly.
Chaos reached his full height, almost a whole head taller than her and his expression was calm. “What do you mean?” His voice was frustratingly even.
“You know exactly what I mean! Your behavior today.” Dawne tried to remain strong but his presence did intimidate her.
“I don’t like him. You know that.” His eyes were a cold slate gray.
“What does it matter if you like him or not? I can do what I please!” She watched as a muscle jumped in his strong clenched jaw. “Besides I don’t even know you!”
“You know me better than you realize.” Chaos stated curtly.
“That’s sheer ridiculousness. You have no right to be rude to me over who I choose to spend my time with.” He deflated then and plopped down on her mattress.
“I don’t like him.” He groaned, eyes cast at the ceiling. “I don’t know why but I just don’t. Every time I see him I get this urge to come rescue you. Like you’re in danger.” Roughly he ran a hand down his chiseled features.
“William is a nice man, he’s completely harmless. The other day...in the market he saved my life.” She could no longer hold the anger in her voice.
“You were in danger?” Chaos’s head shot up at this.
Quickly Dawne explained the incident with the woman and her stolen ring. “I could have been arrested or worse if William hadn’t come along.” She swallowed hard “I can’t understand why my safety means anything to you.”
“I don’t know...I don’t know why.” His voice was soft and twisted.
Dawne gave up and sat down quietly beside him careful not to brush his wings. “I hardly even know you.” She said quietly again.
They remained silent for a while just sitting and staring at the opposite wall. Dawne felt over sensitive to his presence and could feel the warmth radiating off his body.
“Ask me anything.” His warm voice whispered at her side.
“What?”
“Ask me anything. Get to know me.” Suddenly his soft gray eyes were on her. “You said you hardly know me.”
Secretly Dawne was overly pleased at this, she had wanted to know more about him for weeks now. But where to start?
“Um....well...tell me about yourself...” She started lamely.
“I’m not very good at talking about myself-” They both paused seemingly at a loss.
