quick chapter on james buchanan 'bucky' barnes' life in the 1940s. there are some gaps in the mcu about his past, but i'm going to fill them in here. some parts have been taken from the comics, the mcu, or my own mind. some parts have been changed from what is canon but for the sake of the story... just pretend. and bucky's actually going to play a pretty big role as the story continues, so yeah, i needed to settle this with y'all.

i'm gonna start confirming theories from this chapter!!

- james was born on march 10, 1917 in brooklyn

- his mother is winnifred barnes, and his father is george barnes

- winnifred was a house-wife, but she taught some of the children who either didn't have enough money to go to school, or no family

- george was a military officer

- bucky's family was slightly more well-off compared to some other families in brooklyn

- somewhere around higher middle class to low first class

- four years after bucky, on may 25, 1921, rebecca annaliese barnes was born

- when she was small she couldn't say james clearly (sounded like yaimes) so the nickname 'bucky' began

- he wanted to give her a nickname, and called her 'little dove' which was sometimes shortened to 'dove'

- the nickname stuck, but only bucky could call her that

- bucky excelled in school, athletically and academically

- he was also the class clown which meant teachers either loved him or hated him, there was no in between

- he had 'friends' but he didn't really like any of them

- rebecca was the more artistic of the siblings

- teachers loved her, and many couldn't see how she was related to bucky

- she was more introverted preferring to hang out with only her brother, but bucky didn't mind

- as long as she didn't hang out with other boys

- when bucky was 8 and rebecca was 4, their mother passed away in a tragic car accident

- a year later, when bucky was 9 and rebecca was 5, their father passed away due to a parachute malfunction while teaching the cadets how to jump out of a plane

- that's where bucky's fear of heights, and rebecca's fear of falling came in

- they moved in with their aunt (she was a widow with no kids) who lived a few streets down

- she was a seamstress and had enough money to raise the two kids

- they were also provided their parent's fortune

- rebecca was too young to understand what had happened, so bucky just told her, "they had to leave."

- rebecca forced him to pinky promise that he wouldn't ever leave

- of course, the condition that he could never break it was put forward

- bucky looped his pinky around hers, sealing the promise
