splash wars
two weeks later
hawaii
i walked into the hotel with my dad, taking in the smell of palm trees and the sea.
we went up to the front desk.
"room for stark," my dad said.
"i.d?" the receptionist asked.
my dad handed him an i.d. card, and he punched some keys into his computer. he took two plastic key cards, and held them out along with my dad's i.d.
my dad scrunched his face up a little. "i don—"
i rolled my eyes and cut him off, "he doesn't like being handed things. i'll take that." i said grabbing the key cards, and i.d. from him. i held the i.d. and a key card out for my dad. he took it.
we went up to the penthouse suite pepper booked for us, and plopped down. a bellhop walked in with happy and pepper, carrying our bags. he set them down, and we all began claiming rooms.
i took the second biggest room, with a balcony, and en-suite. we had a private hot tub, in the suite.
this kind of reminded me of the lotus hotel and casino. well, without the 'making time in hotel slow down, and time outside speed up'.
i unloaded my suitcase, and went to lie down on my bed. i turned my head, and saw my laptop. in the end, i decided against going to university this fall.
i sat on my couch, and stared blankly at the post-secondary options before me.
'this is stupid.' i thought. 'someone my age would be getting ready for movie night, before the first day of seventh grade. while, i, was deciding what university i wanted to apply for.'
my dad came upstairs from his workshop, and saw me. he sat down beside me on the couch and looked at my laptop screen.
"you know..." he began. "the offer for a gap year or two still stands. if you don't want to start this year. you deserve a break."
i nodded, taking in his words. before camp this year, i was so sure i wanted to start university. now that i've begun taking percy's words to heart, and stopped caring about the press... i'm not so sure.
i thought about the two options.
going to university meant graduating earlier. graduating earlier meant becoming ceo of stark industries earlier. it meant being busy.
i didn't really care much about the position right now.
taking a gap year meant, i could take some of the workload off my shoulders. instead of working on school projects, i could work on some personal ones. i'd have more time to pick up a lot of things i've dropped over the years, like skateboarding.
i looked at my dad. "i think i'll take the break."
"you suck at this," i yelled to my dad, who was trying to surf.
i was sitting on my surfboard, wading in the water. my dad was trying to stand, but he fell over. three times.
once i was a good distance in, i got up, slowly. i waited for a good wave, and began surfing. my dad and i come to hawaii every year. it's tradition. i picked up surfing a while back, and i was decent at it.
my dad finally decided to try surfing. the only problem was that he sucks. he just wants to jump right in. that's not a good idea.
after a few more fails, i convinced him to try sitting, and wading around in the water. he agreed, and we waded around in the water. fish circled us from below.
i skimmed my hand against the surface of the water creating ripples. i enjoyed the calmness around me, until someone splashed me.
i looked up to see me dad, with a smirk.
"what?" he said. "i couldn't help it. you looked too peaceful."
i laughed. "so you splash me?"
"well, y-"
he was cut off by me splashing him, with an even larger wave.
"that's it. you asked for it." he said wading into the water. he splashed me, and i fell off my board. i swam underwater, and tilted his board. he fell over.
the entire day was filled with an epic splash war. i laughed till my sides hurt.
and that was the most fun i've ever had in hawaii.
