we walked through the woods, along the shore of the new jersey riverbank. we were all still in shock, dealing with it differently.

grover was wide-eyed and kept muttering, "three kindly ones. all at once."

percy was silent, just moving along.

i fiddled with my bracelet. i also kept checking my wristband every minute or so. the screen had turned off, and it was a regular band again.

annabeth pulled us along saying things like, "come on! the further we get away, the better,"

"all our money was back there," percy reminded her. "our food and clothes. everything."

"i still have my pack," i added.

"well, maybe if you hadn't decided to jump into the fight—" annabeth ignored me.

"what did you want me to do? let you guys get killed?" percy exclaimed.

"you didn't need to protect me, percy. i would've been fine."

"sliced like sandwich bread," grover put in, "but fine."

"shut up, goat boy," said annabeth. "riley's plan would've worked. we could've held them off a little longer, and then blown them up."

i touched my wristband, as a reminder of the plan.

grover brayed mournfully. "tin cans... a perfectly good bag of tin cans."

"i'll get you some more," i patted his shoulder.

annabeth walked slower and fell in line with percy. i stayed next to grover.

"you should tell him your last name. he'll find out soon enough," he said.

i pursed my lips, "i know, i know. it's —." i sighed, "he treats me normally. he's actually one of my closest friends, already. and... i'm scared."

grover cocked his head to the side, "what are you scared of, ri? percy's a good guy. he's not going to act asshole-ish all of a sudden."
