late 2011

steve slowly opened his eyes.

as he came to his senses he realized he was in a hospital. the fan creaked as it spun slowly, and it smelt of medical supplies. he wondered if he could ask to be switched into rebecca's clinic. at least there, it smelt nice.

he sat up slowly, eyebrows furrowing as he listened to the radio.

"curve ball, high and outside for ball one. so the dodgers are tied, 4-4. and the crowd well knows that with one swing of his bat, this fellow's capable of making it a brand-new game again. just an absolutely gorgeous day here at ebbets field. the phillies have managed to tie up at 4-4. but the dodgers have three men on. pearson beaned reiser in philadelphia last month. wouldn't the youngster like a hit here to return the favour?"

"no," he muttered silently. he remembered this game. rebecca, bucky, and steve were at ebbest field. in the crowd, cheering on the dodgers. he listened closely as the commentary continued.

"pete leans in. here's the pitch. swung on. a line to the right. and it gets past rizzo. three runs will score. reiser heads to third. durocher's going to wave him in. here comes the relay, but they won't get him."

steve shook his head slightly.

a lady walked in, "good morning." she checked her watch and corrected herself, "or should i say afternoon?"

"where am i?" steve asked her.

she smiled a little, "you're in a recovery room in new york city."

steve turned to the radio as the announcer's voice and the cheering fans were heard through it, "the dodgers take the lead, 8-4. oh, dodgers! everyone is on their feet. what a game we have here today, folks. what a game indeed."

steve narrowed his eyes at her. "where am i really?" he repeated.

she shook her head slightly, and laughed a little, "i'm afraid i don't understand."

"the game," he clarified, "it's from may, nineteen forty one. i know, cause i was there. it was freckles' birthday, and reiser hit an inside the park grand slam." he got up from the bed, "now, i'm gonna ask you again. where am i? where's rebecca?"

"captain rogers..." she trailed off.

"who are you?"

two agents of some sort, dressed in black, entered the room. steve stepped back, before he let instincts take over.

long story short, the two agents flew out of the room, breaking through the wall.

steve jumped out after them, and looked around in shock as he realized this was some sort of set. he wondered where rebecca was, if she knew about this.

"captain rogers, wait!" the lady called after him.

steve didn't wait. he ran out the doors, hearing the lady's voice on the intercoms, "all agents code 13, i repeat all agents code 13."

steve ran past more people, all dressed in black like the two he pushed out the wall. he ran out the doors, into an alien environment. cars honked, but they were nothing like the cars he was used to to. he saw taxis, buildings, and roads, but they were all completely different than what he remembered.

steve continued running, until he was completely and utterly lost. tall buildings, with all different lights over them, were all he could see.

he heard the squeal of tires, and looked back to see a bunch of black cars surrounding him.

"at ease, soldier!" someone said from behind him.

steve turned around, recognizing a dark skinned man wearing an eye patch as the source of the call.

"look, i'm sorry about that little show back there," he started, "but... we thought it best to break it to you slowly."

"break what? and where's rebecca? does she know about this? about bucky?"

fury was silent for a second, "you've been asleep, cap. for almost seventy years."

steve looked around him, at the alien environment and he knew the pirate wasn't lying. he missed it, all of it.

"you gonna be okay?" the man asked.

"yeah. yeah. i just... i had a date."
